Dean's Update: July 2023

Thursday, July 27, 2023 - 10:00am

Dear Alumni and Friends,

I am delighted to share the first few installments from our new Campus Voices Futures Series on 90.3 KRNU. This series profiles alumni who are building incredible careers in our fields and have their fingers on the pulse of where our professions are going next. This month, the legendary Rick Alloway interviewed Josh Planos, Brittany Jones-Cooper, Tia Newcomer, Emily Doskow, Juan Perez, Jr. and Dionne Searcey. Check out their interviews to learn more about these superstar alums!

Speaking of superstars, our students won top honors in several categories at the National Undergraduate Student Electronic Media Competition, took home first prize at the Society of Professional Journalists National Mark of Excellence Awards, secured prestigious internships with Dow Jones News Fund, joined the NextGen Global Leaders Network, were named Peer Mentors and made the Dean’s List. Also, Associate Dean Cory Armstrong is being recognized with the Outstanding Woman in Journalism & Mass Communication Education Award by the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communications' Commission on the Status of Women!

While our current students may be on summer break, campus is buzzing with future Huskers. This month we hosted the Nebraska High School Press Association’s summer workshops and two Big Red Summer Camps, one on digital media and one on esports production. We also welcomed 178 incoming freshmen to the college during new student enrollment. We’re currently tracking another 6% over last year’s freshmen class. I’ll keep you posted on how our final numbers shake out.

There are several upcoming opportunities to engage with the college. If you live in the DC area, I’d love for you to join us at the Nebraska Reception on Wednesday, Aug. 9. Several Faculty will be in town presenting research at the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication Conference. We’ll also be conducting preliminary interviews for our faculty positions in journalism and sports promotion.

If you’re in the Denver area, or are planning a trip out for the Nebraska vs. Colorado game, join us on Thursday, Sept. 7, as we take over Coors Field. Then, on Friday, Oct. 27, you can join us back on campus at dear old Nebraska U as we celebrate Homecoming. I hope to see you there!

Go Big Red!
