Technical Director

The position

The Technical Director will oversee the operations of the college’s television studios and FCC licensed radio station, 90.3 KRNU, with responsibilities for overseeing the audio and video studios equipment and production processes, setting up and maintaining audio and video equipment for college programs, providing technical support for programs, working with the practicum directors and operations director to plan and oversee future updates to the studios, providing accurate and complete equipment and maintenance costs, maintaining a budget and recommending new technologies for the facilities. Position will hire and oversee student production interns in the execution of these duties.

Associate’s degree in broadcast production, electrical engineering, or related field plus 3 years experience in broadcast production. Or, five (5) years of experience in broadcast production, equivalent education, or experience will be considered in lieu of an Associate’s degree.

Associate Dean for Research and Faculty Affairs

The position

Reporting to the dean, the Associate Dean for Research and Faculty Affairs in the College of Journalism and Mass Communication is a leader and champion in the areas of faculty development and support. The Associate Dean for Research and Faculty Affairs works to promote and reward research and creative activity across the college and also provides leadership and oversight over faculty affairs.

Specific responsibilities include:

Development and support of research

  • Develop and implement initiatives and processes that promote and reward research and creative activity productivity among faculty in the college
  • Enhance mentoring of new faculty in conducting research, publishing, seeking extramural funding and preparing grant applications
  • Facilitate research collaboration and networking within the college and with faculty in other colleges
  • Serve as chair of the college research and awards committee
  • Serve as the college representative to the Office of Research and Economic Development’s Associate Deans for Research Committee

Development and support of faculty

  • Serve as chair of the college Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Committee
  • Serve as the college representative to the Faculty Affairs College Liaisons group
  • In coordination with the dean, oversee searches for new faculty including search procedures, letters of offer and retention offers
  • Serve as the primary point of contact on faculty personnel matters and, in collaboration with the college faculty, develop policies and procedures to address faculty concerns
  • Work with faculty and staff to organize and oversee the implementation of development programs for faculty that seek to improve the quality of research, teaching and service in the college
  • Develop mechanisms to recognize teaching, research and service accomplishments of the faculty and identify faculty for honors and awards, as well as training and leadership opportunities
  • In coordination with the Associate Dean for Academic Programs, determine all faculty teaching assignments

Promotion and Evaluation*

  • In coordination with the dean, annually evaluate tenure-track and non-tenure-track college faculty
  • Provide support and guidance to faculty in the development of annual review, mid-term review and promotion materials
  • Serve as the administration’s liaison with the promotion and tenure committee, ensuring the consistent application of procedures across faculty
  • Serve on appropriate university committees.

*If an associate professor is hired into this position, these duties will be adjusted as appropriate.

Policies and Procedures

  • In collaboration with the college faculty, develop, maintain and update the college bylaws, committee structure and voting procedures
  • In collaboration with the college faculty, develop, maintain and update college policies and procedures, including policies and procedures related to faculty apportionment, research expectations, course-size to course-load apportionment, promotion and tenure, and professorship application and renewal
  • Ensure the college bylaws, policies and procedures align with university bylaws, policies and procedures

Minimum qualifications include a Ph.D. or equivalent with at least 5 years full-time experience in journalism and mass communications education; a successful record of teaching, scholarship and extramural funding; experience evaluating teaching and research activities and academic credentials that qualify for the rank of Associate Professor or higher with tenure.
