Dean's Update: May 2024

The end of the year provides a great opportunity to welcome our incredible alumni back to campus. In the last month we welcomed back MRM Global Creative Director Ronald Ng (’93) and New York Times Reporter Dionne Searcey (’93) to talk about their experience in global advertising and journalism. We also celebrated the opening of Joel Sartore’s (‘86) ‘Photo Ark’ exhibit at Morrill Hall and Vern Powers’ (’84) honor with the Jeff Vaske Service in Entrepreneurship Award.

Baker Hansen joins Nebraska Alumni Association Council

The Nebraska Alumni Association has announced the selection of eight talented and accomplished individuals to the Council of Alumni Ambassadors. One of the new members is CoJMC alumna Sarah Baker Hansen (‘01), food critic at Grow Omaha and director of public and media relations at Emspace + Lovgren.

Faculty, staff and students win March Awards

In March, we celebrated the achievements of our students, faculty and staff at the College of Journalism and Mass Communications. Shoun Hill was named the March Professor of the Month, Naomi Delkamiller was named the March Student of the Month, and Zac Franzen and Kaci Richter received the February Not Too Shabby Awards.

Huskers win big at Eric Sevareid Awards

Students and faculty from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln College of Journalism and Mass Communications won 22 Eric Sevareid Awards for exceptional broadcasting journalism during the Midwest Broadcast Journalists Association annual convention on April 5 in Minneapolis

Alumna to receive 2024 Leadership Nebraska Award

Jennifer Higgins ('96) will be presented with the Nebraska Press Association's 2024 Leadership Nebraska Award on April 26 during the NPA annual convention. Higgins is the managing editor at Antelope County News in Neligh and was nominated by for the award by a member of the Neligh City Council. Read more from Norfolk Daily News:

Alumni panel dives deep into media ethics and decision-making

On March 7, 2024, the College of Journalism and Mass Communications at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln hosted a dynamic panel discussion on media ethics. Moderated by associate professor Rick Alloway, the panel featured six of the college’s alumni who offered students invaluable insights into real-world ethical dilemmas.

Nebraska Promise helps West bring entrepreneurial spirit to class

Mitch West has never shied away from a new challenge. After successful forays into music journalism, photography, craft beer and professional firework and pyrotechnic shows for Husker athletic events, the multi-hyphenate and multitalented West still had one lingering goal he wanted to achieve since childhood: become a Husker.
