Dean's Update: November 2023

Tuesday, November 28, 2023 - 9:30am

Dear Alumni and Friends,

I hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday with family and friends. We are thankful so many of you were able to come back to campus for our Homecoming Party and Scholarship Brunch. Check out all the pictures and let me know if you want me to send you one of your glamour shots!

We truly could not offer the top-notch education and hands-on learning opportunities we provide without your support and engagement. In this newsletter, we cover why superstar alums Kris Malkoski (’82) and Charlie Arnot (‘86) established internship and scholarship funds and celebrate Caitlin Wain (’07, ’10), Taylor DeMaro (’15) and Linsey Armstrong (’17) who were named to the Young Alumni Academy. Armstrong was instrumental in recognizing renowned Supreme Court journalist and CoJMC alum Lyle Denniston (‘55) with the Distinguished Nebraskan Award last month.

We also cover the massive growth in our sports media and communication major, how we brought together alumni and students to assist the U.S. Navy with naming the staterooms on the U.S.S. Nebraska, our data journalism class conducting research for a series of articles in Flatwater Free Press on “Who’s Buying Nebraska,” Jacht collaborating with local agencies for career development and how a grant from the Stanton Foundation will help us make a big impact on rural journalism.

At the urging of our Advisory Board, this newsletter also includes a Holiday Wish List. If you’re wondering what we are hoping to see under our tree this year, the list includes cutting edge equipment, like LiveU, Tieline and a Mira Replay Server; furniture for study spaces in Andersen Hall; funding for recruiting and alumni engagement events; and student scholarships for all majors and study abroad. You have likely heard about the latest budget cuts to part-time instruction. If you loved taking classes from full-time working professionals in the field who also served as adjunct faculty in the college, we would greatly appreciate a gift to faculty support. Every gift makes an impact.

We have much to celebrate this month, including assistant professor Ryan Tan winning the University Research Slam, junior Naomi Delkamiller’s first place finish at the College Media Film and Audio Festival, senior Kale Murray and junior Zoey Reeves winning the Bailey Lauerman Design Diversity Challenge, senior Hannah-Kate Kinney being named Homecoming Queen, senior Alex Neill being named Student of the Month, juniors Tyler Hurst and Brody Wilken and alum Avery Jelinek (’19) being named the 2023 American Association of Professional Baseball Social Media Team of the Year, the premier of a documentary supported by alum Beverly Deepe Keever ('57) and all our Huskers on the Move.

If you have news to share with your fellow J-School grads, please send me a note. I’d love to hear from you and wish you a wonderful holiday season.

Go Big Red!

Shari
