CoJMC secures Nebraska Research Initiative grant to establish SMART-Lab

The College of Journalism and Mass Communications is proud to announce that it has received a grant of $101,376 from the Nebraska Research Initiative to support establishing the Social and Traditional Media Analytics and Research Tools Lab (SMART-Lab). This new facility will be a cornerstone for social and traditional media research, fostering interdisciplinary collaboration and providing invaluable resources for academic and industry partners.

Rabble Media Club gives high school students college-level experiences

The College of Journalism and Mass Communications has partnered with Bay High and the Cooper Foundation to host an after school program. Rabble Media Club meets every Tuesday and Thursday and had its first meeting on Tuesday, Oct. 25.

Friends mourn the loss of Mike Stricklin, encourage others to contribute to the scholarship in his name

A group of College of Journalism and Mass Communications alumni wrote a letter to fellow alumni grieving the loss of professor and friend, Mike Stricklin, who passed away this September. The letter encouraged others to continue Stricklin’s legacy and give to the Michael Stricklin Scholarship Fund.

University of Nebraska launches Only in Nebraska campaign to address future needs of the state

On Nov. 18, 2022, University of Nebraska System President Ted Carter, joined by the chancellors of the four University of Nebraska campuses, announced the public launch of Only in Nebraska: A Campaign for Our University’s Future. The campaign is a historic effort to encourage at least 150,000 benefactors to give $3 billion to support University of Nebraska students, faculty, academic programs and research to address the needs of the state.

Bettger named Center for Entrepreneurship fellow

The Center for Entrepreneurship at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln has named 43 professionals as the inaugural class of Entrepreneurship Fellows—one of which is Rick Bettger, a CoJMC alum who graduated in 1985 with news editorial degree.

Designing Effective Health Messaging with Ciera Kirkpatrick

As the pandemic settled in, Ciera Kirkpatrick was a new mom working on her doctorate, a double challenge added to the already tall order of first-time motherhood. Kirkpatrick reflected her experience in her dissertation, studying how social media depictions of motherhood can affect how women perceive their own experience. It informs her broader interest in how media messages influence people’s health-related decisions.

Jones wins the Faculty Research and Creative Activity Slam

Valerie Jones, Seaton Distinguished Professor of advertising and public relations, was voted the winner by attendees, earning a $1,000 prize to go toward her research at the fifth annual Faculty Research and Creative Activity Slam.

Scholarship Spotlight: Matousek
