Obituary: JL (John) Schmidt

JL (John) Schmidt, 77, was born December 20, 1946, in Scottsbluff, Nebr., and passed to eternity April 21, 2024. A Scottsbluff native and 1976 University of Nebraska-Lincoln College of Journalism graduate, Schmidt began his newspaper career at The Daily Nebraskan in 1966. He worked as a reporter, copy editor, business manager and night news editor.

Walsh named Center for Transformative Teaching Ambassador

College of Journalism and Mass Communications assistant professor Jessica Walsh has been named a Center for Transformative Teaching (CTT) Ambassador. Walsh completed the ambassador level of the Reflective Practitioner Program.

The new faculty will teach across the college’s programs, including advertising and public relations, broadcasting, journalism and sports media and communications.

14 CoJMC faculty members attend the 2022 AEJMC conference

Fourteen faculty members from the College of Journalism and Mass Communications attended the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication (AEJMC) conference Aug. 2-6, in Detroit. Many served as panelists, moderators and discussants or they presented their research in a variety of sessions throughout the four-day conference.

2022 Nebraska Journalism Hall of Fame Inductees are Announced

Six inductees will join the Nebraska Journalism Hall of Fame during ceremonies to be held Saturday, October 22, 2022, at The Graduate Hotel, 141 N. 9th St., in Lincoln, NE. 2022 inductees include associate professor emeritus Tim Anderson and associate dean and journalism professor John Bender.

Social media research workshop exceeds 240 registrants

The Public Insight Lab in the College of Journalism and Mass Communications hosted a free Zoom workshop “Tools and Training for Social Media Research” on May 6. Valerie Jones, director of the Public Insight Lab and CoJMC’s Seaton professor of journalism, and Lisa PytlikZillig, interim director of the UNL Social and Behavioral Sciences Research Consortium, were the workshop’s creators and moderators.

The Public Insight Lab in the College of Journalism and Mass Communications will host a free Zoom workshop on May 6, with support from the UNL Social & Behavioral Sciences Research Consortium and the Methodology and Evaluation Core Facility. The workshop, “Tools and Training for Social Media Research,” will showcase current projects using social media research at UNL, the University of Alabama, Clemson and Louisiana State University.
