Five faculty join the College of Journalism and Mass Communications

The College of Journalism and Mass Communications is pleased to announce the addition of five new faculty beginning in the fall 2022 semester. The new faculty will teach across the college’s programs, including advertising and public relations, broadcasting, journalism and sports media and communication.

“We are very excited about these new hires,” said Shari Veil, dean of the College of Journalism and Mass Communications. “They bring a tremendous depth of experience to the college to help build upon our strategic priorities and achieve our vision of being a national leader in experiential education.”

The new faculty are:

Armstrong Headshot

Cory Armstrong, Ph.D., Associate Dean for Research and Faculty Affairs

Before joining CoJMC, Armstrong was a professor and department chair in the Department of Journalism and Creative Media at the University of Alabama. She has previously served as professor and director of the Mayborn School of Journalism at the University of North Texas and associate professor and graduate chair at the University of Florida.

Before joining academia, Armstrong held positions as bureau chief at The Vindicator in Youngstown, Ohio, and beat reporter at The Journal in Middletown, Ohio.

Armstrong’s research focuses on legacy and emerging media, content diversity and audience segmentation. Recently, she has focused on media messaging and severe weather. Armstrong has published more than 44 peer-reviewed articles in various academic journals.

Armstrong holds a B.A. in English from Miami University an M.A. in journalism and mass communications and a Ph.D. in mass communications from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

She will teach classes in the college’s journalism and graduate programs.

Baldinelli Headshot

Sharon Baldinelli, Ph.D., Assistant Professor of Practice

Sharon Baldinelli is an assistant professor of practice in advertising and public relations at the College of Journalism and Mass Communications. She has more than 20 years of experience working in health care in Florida, Texas and Alabama. Most recently, she served as an administrative process improvement specialist for Brookwood Baptist Healthcare in Birmingham.

Baldinelli teaches classes in advertising and public relations writing, strategy and health communication. She holds an A.A. in Nursing from Sante Fe College, a B.A. in sociology and M.P.H. from the University of Florida and a Ph.D. in communication and information sciences from the University of Alabama.

Baldinelli will teach classes in the college’s advertising and public relations program.

Doleman Headshot

Bill Doleman, Lecturer

Bill Doleman has more than 25 years of experience in sports broadcasting and play-by-play. Doleman has worked for a number of major sports networks including NBC Sports, ESPN, Fox Sports, Big Ten Network, ABC Sports, AT&T/Root Sports, ASN and Eleven Sports. He has also been on staff with both Comcast Sports Net/NBC and Mountain West Sports Network.

For the 2016, 2018 and 2020 Olympics, Doleman was on the NBC sports play-by-play team calling archery, tae kwon do, shooting, modern pentathlon, race walking and curling.

Doleman has a B.J. in broadcasting from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.

Doleman will teach classes in the college’s broadcasting and sports media and communication programs.

Hill Headshot

Shoun Hill, Assistant Professor of Practice

Shoun Hill is an assistant professor of practice in the College of Journalism and Mass Communications. He has more than 15 years of experience as a photographer for newspapers in Louisville, Minneapolis, Memphis and Orlando. Before joining the college, he was a photo editor for the Associated Press in New York City.

Hill recently expanded into documentary film, shooting and editing a film about the plight of African American farmers, “Black Farmers in Search of Justice.” The film has received numerous awards including awards at the Denton Black Film Festival, the Docs Without Borders Film Festival and the Impact DOCS Awards.

In addition to his appointment as an assistant professor of practice, Hill will be appointed as the Buffett-Mangleson-Sartore Chair of Photojournalism. He has a B.A. from Frostburg State College and an M.A. in visual communication from Ohio University.

Hill will teach classes in photojournalism and visual communication.

Remund Headshot

Dave Remund, Ph.D., Assistant Professor of Practice

Dave Remund is an assistant professor of practice in the College of Journalism and Mass Communications. He has 21 years of professional marketing and communication experience for companies across the United States including Wells Fargo, Bank of America and Principal Financial Group.

In addition to his significant professional experience, Remund has 10 years of teaching experience at the University of Oregon, Drake University, San Diego State University, Butler University and Florida State University.

Remund holds a B.A. in public relations, an M.C.L. from Drake University and a Ph.D. in mass communication from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Remund will teach classes in the college’s advertising and public relations program. He will also serve as the faculty liaison for the Public Relations Student Society of America Bateman Case Study Competition, and Buoy, a mission-driven student-run advertising agency.

The new faculty began work in the college on Aug. 15, 2022.
