CoJMC at the 2017 ADDY awards

The College of Journalism and Mass Communications had a strong showing of its students’ abilities at the 2017 ADDY Awards on Saturday, Feb. 18. The CoJMC students won seven ADDYs (4 Golds and 3 Silvers) in seven different categories. In addition, Jacht, the University of Nebraska–Lincoln CoJMC student-run advertising agency, also won a silver.

Bowling places first, Rausch finishes sixth in Hearst competition

Chris Bowling, a junior journalism student, and Natasha Rausch, a senior journalism student, placed first and sixth respectively in the enterprise reporting competition of The Hearst Journalism Awards Program.

Kerr and Penrice place third in BEA Festival of Media Arts

Senior Mekenzie Kerr and sophomore Zachary Penrice, University of Nebraska–Lincoln College of Journalism and Mass Communications students, both placed third in the Broadcast Education Association Festival of Media Arts.

Jordon to be honored by Omaha Press Club

Steve Jordon, a 1968 University of Nebraska–Lincoln College of Journalism and Mass Communications alumnus, will be honored March 18 as the Omaha Press Club’s next Face on the Barroom Floor. Jordon has worked as an Omaha World-Herald reporter for 50 years and covers Warren Buffett for the newspaper.

13 CoJMC faculty and staff honored by University of Nebraska–Lincoln Parents Association

The University of Nebraska–Lincoln Parents Association honored 13 faculty and staff from the College of Journalism and Mass Communications for their contribution to students. Each honoree received the Certificate of Recognition for Contributions to Students presented at an annual recognition ceremony on Friday, Feb. 3. The ceremony was organized by the Division of Student Affairs and co-sponsored by the University of Nebraska–Lincoln Teaching Council and University of Nebraska–Lincoln Parents Association.

Dean attends Carnegie-Knight meeting

Dean Maria Marron attended the Carnegie-Knight deans’ meeting in Cambridge, Mass., Feb. 6 - 7. Among the topics for discussion were Diversity, and the Future of Journalism in the Trump Era. The Knight Foundation is committed to enhancing diversity in newsrooms — and in classrooms— and highlighted the Ida B. Wells Society for investigative reporting. Nikole Hannah-Jones, reporter, The New York Times Magazine; founder of the Ida B. Wells Society for Investigative Reporting, a training and mentorship organization aimed at increasing the number of investigative reporters of color, spoke about how diversity in newsrooms has not increased since the 1960s and how important it is for students and journalists of color to learn investigative techniques.

Bloomberg News co-founder Matthew Winkler to visit and present at University of Nebraska–Lincoln

Matthew Winkler, editor-in-chief emeritus of Bloomberg News, will visit the University of Nebraska–Lincoln on Thursday, Feb. 9, to discuss the role of media in the age of Twitter and the founding and growth of his global news organization.

McMahon to film independent movie in Fremont, Nebraska

Kevin McMahon, a College of Journalism and Mass Communications alumnus, will work as a location manager and unit production manager for an independent movie being filmed in Fremont, Nebraska, Feb. 1-12.

Nebraska to partner in national drone journalism training

The Drone Journalism Lab at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln College of Journalism and Mass Communications is a partner in a new innovative program to train journalists in using unmanned aerial systems for news coverage.

Bender takes honors seminar to Washington, D.C.
