Dean's Update: August 2023

Thursday, August 24, 2023 - 8:45am

Dear Alumni and Friends,

I love the start of the fall semester. The energy and excitement even cuts through the steamy 100+ degree heat we’ve been experiencing in Nebraska! We are so excited for the start of a new semester and to introduce you to the five new faculty and new director of academic advising starting this academic year.

But we are not done growing. Our freshmen class is up yet again, thanks to our recruiting efforts, which means we are hiring yet again. If you or someone you know is qualified and interested in making the leap to academia, please send them our way. We are hiring for an assistant professor of practice in journalism to teach writing courses and help coordinate the Nebraska High School Press Association and a tenure track assistant/associate professor in sports promotion to help lead our fastest growing major, sports media and communication.

We have new students, faculty and staff on campus, but I am delighted to also be welcoming back old friends to the college this fall. Our newly established Dean’s Advisory Board is stacked with superstar alums who are going to hold us accountable to the lofty goals of our strategic plan. The board has already met twice virtually, but they will be back on campus over Homecoming. I can’t wait to show them all what we’ve been building! Get to know the board here.

We’ve had an exciting couple weeks, racking up awards from the Nebraska Broadcasters Association, Pinnacle Awards, Edward R. Murrow, Broadcast Education Association, PRSA and PRSSA. Congratulations also goes out to our alumni making big moves. I am so proud of our faculty, staff, students and alumni and the work they produce. I can’t help but brag when they get recognized for it!

There are several upcoming opportunities to get involved with your alma mater. You could sign up for the Young Alumni Academy, volunteer to write Postcards of Pride or join us for the Nebraska Career Catalyst.

If you live in the Denver area (or are planning to make the trip), please join me as we Take Over Coors Field on Sept. 7. Can’t make it to Denver? How about New York City[link to DwD invite]? We’ll be bringing CoJMC students along for that trip to get know our alumni in the area. Of course, you are all welcome home to Dear Old Nebraska U this fall. The CoJMC Homecoming Party will be on Oct. 27, and I’d love to see you there!

Go Big Red!

Shari
