20 Huskers to compete in the 2023 Perry Photojournalism Challenge

With three monetary awards on the line, 20 students in the University of Nebraska–Lincoln’s College of Journalism and Mass Communications will compete in the Philip Perry Photojournalism Challenge from Feb. 25-26 and on March 4.

1st place will receive $7,000, 2nd place will receive $2,000 and 3rd place will receive $1,000 applied directly to their student accounts. The Perry Challenge is supported by UNL alum and long-time friend of the college Philip Perry.

Beginning at noon Feb. 25, participants will have 24 hours to shoot and edit a photo essay inspired by the theme “Framing Gen Z.” At 10 a.m. on March 4, a team of five professional photographers will begin reviewing essays and select five finalists by 2 p.m.

The finalists will have three hours to prepare for their final presentations at 5 p.m. in the Perry Photojournalism Studio at the Agency. The Agency is an experiential learning space located on the third floor of the Lincoln Children’s Museum.

Judges will consider the following criteria: subject matter, impact, creativity, composition, technical quality and storytelling.
