University of Nebraska–Lincoln PRSSA Bateman team places third in national finals

The University of Nebraska-Lincoln Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA) won third place in the 2017 Bateman Case Study Competition in Chicago. The team received $1,500 and a plaque. This is the third year the CoJMC has had a Bateman team.

Connolly and Yen selected for Dow Jones News Fund internship program

Lynn Yen and Aidan Connolly, senior journalism students, at the College of Journalism and Mass Communications, are participating in the Dow Jones News Fund (DJNF) internship program this summer.

Kessler qualifies for Hearst National Championship

Calla Kessler, a senior journalism student in the College of Journalism and Mass Communications, is a finalist in the Hearst Photojournalism Competition for her photo story “Fostering a Future” and a variety of news, portrait and sports photos taken throughout the year. Kessler has qualified for the national championship held May 29 – June 2, in San Francisco. She was one of six students selected from 197 entries received nationwide.

Brown-Hulme wins Hearst Profile Writing, Rausch places eighth

Lauren Brown-Hulme, a junior political science and journalism student in the College of Journalism and Mass Communications, won the Hearst Personality/Profile Writing Competition with her story Shepherd of the Streets. Brown-Hulme received a $2,600 award and qualified for the national championship held May 29 – June 2, in San Francisco. She was one of 10 students selected from 114 entries submitted from 62 schools nationwide.

Alumnus passes on a legacy to future journalists and professional communicators

High school students who wish to encounter real-life journalism experiences, skills and careers are the reason Nebraska alumnus Donald L. Ferguson of Palm Springs, California, has announced a generous planned gift to the College of Journalism and Mass Communications. The bequest will provide support for the college’s Explore Media program.

CoJMC hosts first Adobe Creative Jam

The University of Nebraska-Lincoln College of Journalism and Mass Communications hosted an Adobe Creative Jam on Thursday, April 27, at Andersen Hall. This was the first time the Creative Jam was hosted on University of Nebraska–Lincoln’s campus, and the event drew competitors from multiple disciplines.

CoJMC receives Robert F. Kennedy Journalism Award for Wounds of Whiteclay

The University of Nebraska–Lincoln College of Journalism & Mass Communications was awarded the Robert F. Kennedy Journalism Award from the Robert F. Kennedy Foundation for Human Rights on Monday, May 1. This award recognizes outstanding achievement in journalism at the collegiate level that focuses on social injustices and human rights. Only one school receives the award each year. The CoJMC was recognized for its work Wounds of Whiteclay.

Cordes, Hansen win 2016 Thomas C. Sorensen Award

Henry Cordes and Matt Hansen of the Omaha World-Herald were selected for the 2016 Thomas C. Sorensen Award for their investigative series into Goodwill Omaha.

Dean Marron receives L.J. Hortin Distinguished Alumna Award

Maria Marron, dean of the College of Journalism and Mass Communications, was honored with the L.J. Hortin Distinguished Alumna Award by the E.W. Scripps School of Journalism, Ohio University, April 20.

Shively named Saltdogs' director of communications and broadcasting

Michael Shively, a 2016 University of Nebraska–Lincoln College of Journalism & Mass Communications alumnus, has been named the Lincoln Saltdogs’ new Director of Broadcasting and Communications. Shively’s responsibilities include being the “Voice of the Saltdogs” and broadcasting every game of the 2017 season.
