Graduation Spotlight: Kai Xing Toon

For broadcasting graduate Kai Xing Toon, graduating from Nebraska isn't just about getting a degree. As she celebrates this milestone, she reflects on the friendships, memories and growth she experienced through her college involvements in the Business International Student Organization and the Malaysia Student Association, as well as in the classroom, as a videographer at Jacht Agency and on the production crew for Nebraska Nightly.

Delkamiller inducted into the 2024-25 Mortar Board class

One College of Journalism and Mass Communications student, Naomi Delkamiller, was inducted into the 2023-24 Mortar Board class on April 13 at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln’s annual Ivy Day ceremonies.

Petrotta named ESPN Research Fellow

University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) International Gaming Institute (IGI) announced the recipients of the 2024 ESPN Research Fellowships. This year’s selection showcases a diverse group of scholars whose project proposals will be pivotal in advancing knowledge on responsible gambling messaging in sports media.

Faculty, staff and students win April Awards

In April, we celebrated the achievements of our students, faculty and staff at the College of Journalism and Mass Communications. Adam Wagler was named the April Professor of the Month, Naren Narasimhan was named the April Student of the Month, and Shari Veil, Barney McCoy and Alisa Smith received the April Not Too Shabby Awards.

Kraus receives the Nelson Dream Big Award

Marissa Kraus, a senior journalism major from Columbia, Missouri, was awarded the Nelson Dream Big Award from the UNL College of Journalism and Mass Communications. The award will help fund her summer internship with the Los Angeles Times.

Huskers win 11 awards in the SPJ Region 7 Mark of Excellence competition

Current and former students from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln College of Journalism and Mass Communications earned 11 awards in the Society of Professional Journalists’ Region 7 Mark of Excellence Awards Competition on April 23.

Bateman team earns honorable mention in national competition

The University of Nebraska-Lincoln's College of Journalism and Mass Communications Bateman Case Study team has earned an honorable mention and a top-12 finish in the 2024 national competition. The Public Relations Student Society of America hosts the Bateman competition annually for public relations students, allowing them to implement an entire public relations campaign using their classroom education and internship experiences.

News21 Huskers win Webby People’s Voice Award

The Carnegie-Knight News21 Program at Arizona State University won a People’s Voice Webby Award for “America After Roe.” Three Huskers were involved in the 2023 project: Naomi Delkamiller,  a junior journalism and advertising and public relations major from Omaha and alumni Jenna Ebbers (‘23) of Cambridge and Joseph Zakaria (‘22) of Lincoln.

Huskers place third in the National Student Advertising Competition

The University of Nebraska-Lincoln's team placed third at the District 9 American Advertising Federation’s National Student Advertising Competition (NSAC) held in Kansas City on April 19. The regional competitors come from colleges and universities in Nebraska, Iowa, Kansas and Missouri. Seven schools competed at this year’s competition.

Noble and Tomesh emcee 2024 New Venture Competition

Two UNL College of Journalism and Mass Communications students served as emcees for the Center for Entrepreneurship's 37th annual New Venture Competition. Sophomore Mackenzie Noble of West Dundee, Illinois and junior Alaina Tomesh of Rice Lake, Wisconsin, emceed the first two rounds of the competition on April 16 at the Nebraska Union, as well as the final round and award reception on April 18 at the Rococo Theatre.
