Tuesday, April 25, 2023 - 3:00pm

Jacob Vanderford has been awarded the first Linda Beermann Scholarship by the Nebraska Press Association. The scholarship was awarded at the NPA's annual convention on April 15, 2023. Vanderford, who is from Lincoln, Nebraska, is a junior sports media and communication and advertising and public relations double major at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln College of Journalism and Mass Communications.

The Linda Beermann Scholarship was established in honor of Linda Beermann, a long-time Nebraska reporter and newscaster, who passed away on Nov. 25, 2022. The scholarship is awarded to qualified graduates of Nebraska high schools who are enrolled in a post-secondary educational program at a college or university and are interested in community-based journalism or agricultural communications.

Vanderford, who met all the eligibility requirements for the scholarship, impressed the NPA Foundation Scholarship Committee with his scholastic ability, good citizenship in school and demonstrated interest in news, editorial, photography, circulation, production/design or marketing/advertising careers at a weekly, semi-weekly or daily newspaper.

"I am thrilled that the Nebraska Press Association has awarded Jacob Vanderford the Linda Beermann Scholarship," said Shari Veil, dean of the College of Journalism and Mass Communications. "This recognition is a testament to Jacob's hard work, dedication and passion for community-based journalism."

The NPA offers scholarships to qualified graduates of Nebraska high schools who are enrolled in post-secondary educational programs at colleges or universities interested in community-based journalism or agricultural communications.
