By the Numbers: Course Equity Gaps

Sunday, December 10, 2023 - 8:00am

Course Equity Gaps articulate the difference in Drop, Fail and Withdraw rates between represented and underrepresented students. The more significant the gap, the worse underrepresented students perform in a course compared to represented students.

A university-wide goal is to reduce these gaps for underrepresented students. Using this information, we can identify areas in our college that need attention to help support underrepresented student success.

The gaps in this report are aggregated DFW rates over the past five years, 2018-2023.

CoJMC had a course equity gap of 5.1% during that time frame. Our overall DFW rate for represented students was 6.8%, while our underrepresented DFW rate was 11.9%. Compared to other colleges on campus, our equity gap is on the lower end, with only Fine and Performing Arts and Architecture having lower course equity gaps.

What can faculty do to improve course equity gaps?

Step 1: Review your course data

The Office of the Executive Vice Chancellor provides instructors with data about their courses directly in Canvas. Faculty can click on “Course Insights” in the Canvas navigation pane to access their data.

Review your course data to understand the demographics of students in your upcoming courses and the performance of underrepresented and first-generation students in your past courses. To learn more about the data available to you, visit https://executivevc.unl.edu/academic-excellence/undergraduate-analytics..

Step 2: Use the Inclusive Course Checklist

The Center for Transformative Teaching has developed an inclusive course checklist to help instructors make their courses more inclusive and better support the learning needs of all students.

Go through the checklist for each of your courses.

Step 3: Contact Amy Ort

If you need help with any aspect of the course checklist, make an appointment to meet with Instructional Designer Amy Ort. She is an expert in instructional design and is here to help you help students succeed in your courses.
