The National Student Advertising Competition (NSAC) team from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln won second place in the American Advertising Federation District 9 regional competition in Kansas City on April 13. The team, representing the University's College of Journalism and Mass Communications, won second place.

Adjunct Professor Rich Bailey and Professor of Practice Michael Goff co-taught the class of 19 students from the University’s College of Journalism and Mass Communications.

This year’s client, Ocean Spray, challenged teams to create a marketing campaign that drives relevancy of the brand for millennials across both food and beverages. The UNL NSAC team worked on the project for six months to develop “Your life. Best Served with Ocean Spray.” The campaign includes experiential marketing tactics, video ads, partnerships, media placement, a philanthropic event and more.

More than 150 universities around the country participate in the competition each year. UNL competed against six other teams from Iowa, Nebraska, Missouri and Kansas. Each team presented its campaign to a panel of judges during a 20-minute presentation followed by a Q&A session.

“This was a beautiful campaign from start to finish, and it began with solid research guided by adjunct professor Diane Krajicek,” Goff said. “Truly elegant in every phase.”

Additional awards were presented to Morgan Kumm, a senior advertising and public relations major from Wausa, Nebraska, for “Best Presenter” and to the team for “Best Buyer Persona” for its specific target audience character, “Monica.”

The UNL NSAC team has competed in the regional competition for 14 consecutive years and placed either first or second in the past 10 years.
