Norton to be honored by Wheaton College

Will Norton, Jr., former dean of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln College of Journalism and Mass Communications, will be honored with a Distinguished Service to Society award by the Wheaton College Alumni Association.

“Dean Norton has been a strong and steadfast leader in journalism and mass communications education throughout his career,” said Amy Struthers, interim dean of the University of Nebraska–Lincoln College of Journalism and Mass Communications. “He has positively impacted not only our program but programs through the country and the world.”

Norton graduated from Wheaton College with a bachelor's degree in 1963. He also has a master’s degree in mass communications from Indiana University and a Ph.D. in mass communications from the University of Iowa.

Norton was dean of the University of Nebraska–Lincoln College of Journalism and Mass Communications from 1990-2009. Since 2009, he has served as dean of the Meek School of Journalism and New Media at the University of Mississippi. He also served as president of the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication (2000-2001) and as president of the Association of Schools of Journalism and Mass Communication (1989-1990). In 2005, Dr. Norton was named Journalism Administrator of the Year by the Scripps Howard Foundation.

“This is a well-deserved honor,” said Struthers. “We are proud to carry on Dean Norton’s outstanding legacy at University of Nebraska–Lincoln.”
