A message from Interim Dean Struthers

This is a special week at the CoJMC as we celebrate J-Days, a springtime tradition. I am especially excited about this year’s event, because our students are in charge! The Student Advisory Board (SAB), with members that include freshmen through seniors, and representatives of each major, has created a wonderful suite of activities. The leadership they have taken to add their own contributions to our college culture is truly heart-warming.

A highlight of J-Days is our keynote speaker: our own young alum, Sophie Tatum, now a reporter at CNN. We were fortunate to partner on this event with the Seline family, to name Sophie’s visit the Seline Lecture for 2018. The funding provided by this endowment will not only cover the expenses of bringing Sophie back to University of Nebraska–Lincoln, but provide an informal dinner after the presentation, for students to interact more with Sophie. This aspect of the fund is in keeping with the intent of the family to honor their parents with both a formal lecture and casual dialogue between a professional and our current students.

We are so pleased that the Selines found this visit to be worthy of the designation of a Seline Lecture. Even better, the family has a new generation at CoJMC: Libby Seline is a freshman in our college, and will provide a welcome from the family at the Lecture and a brief description of the fund’s history and purpose. Another wonderful connection to the traditions that enrich life in our college!

As we take steps toward our ideal college, J Days is a great reminder that traditions matter. And that our students not only experience our culture, they help build it.

Do you remember a springtime J-Days celebration during your time at CoJMC? What traditions were meaningful to you from your days as a student in our program! I’d love to hear from you. Please click here to share your memories.
