A message from Dean Struthers

Dear Friends of CoJMC,

We have been celebrating Homecoming this week, our time to welcome alums back into our classes and our building. I am constantly impressed with the graduates of our programs, who are incredibly loyal and ready to give back. This is a moment when we can visibly acknowledge YOUR role in our family of stakeholders, as supporters of our college, disciplines and industries.

Tonight’s evening reception will bring over 200 alums in to Andersen Hall for a mix-and-mingle cocktail party. Along with RSVPs, many of you sent us memories of days on campus, whether at Nebraska Hall, Avery Hall or Andersen. Those notes, plus any headshots and “where are they now” information, provided content for a show that will play on screens throughout the building. You can access that show here.

Our Foundation will be part of the reception, helping alums give back through donations to general or specific college funds. Did you have experiences at CoJMC that helped shape you and your career? Would you like to ensure other students have those same opportunities for a life-changing education? Then please consider making a gift to our College of Journalism and Mass Communication. You will help make a difference for the next generation, and any amount makes an impact. If you have programs or activities you’d like to support, or you want to contribute to the general health of the college, or add to our scholarship funds, you can stop by one of the Foundation tables in the lobby or access the Foundation’s site here.

Five outstanding CoJMC alums of color have volunteered their time during the week to help make UNL’s first Multicultural Homecoming a significant time to recognize and engage diverse current and former students. Juanita Page, NaTasha Rollerson-Gordon, Karla Martinez, Molly Chapple and Rebekah Schlichting gave us the gift of their time, visiting classes, talking to clubs, meeting with individuals, doing interviews for our college media, and participating in the all-campus activities that were part of this inaugural event. Read more about them here.

A sixth alum, Marissa Piette, visited with us to launch our 125th anniversary project with her Washington DC agency, The History Factory (http://www.historyfactory.com ). She met with faculty, staff, students and administrators to ensure our celebration of the first-ever journalism class on our campus meshes with the institution’s 150th anniversary. Marissa and The History Factory are graciously donating her time and expertise for this project.

Homecoming is an important moment for us to share with you all the great positive stories we are creating every day at CoJMC. As we join in one united college message, we are proud to tell the stories of the exciting work we all do together for the benefit of our students and the crazy bright future we are building for our programs.

Amy
