Why did you choose to come to Nebraska and specifically the College of Journalism?
UNL instantly felt like a home away from home for me. I fell in love with the city of Lincoln and inviting people on campus. When I toured the CoJMC, I felt inspired and motivated while I learned about the curriculum and opportunities within the college. I really believed that I would gain knowledge about the advertising and public relations industries that I wouldn't be able to find at any other university.
Who at Nebraska has helped you be successful? Is there a professor who has made a big impact on your education?
Jemalyn Griffin has been an incredibly supportive mentor to me since my sophomore year. She has empowered me to be confident in a field that can be competitive and incites burnout easily. She also has helped me discover my passion for strategic management roles such as account services and project management. I'd be lost without her guidance and knowledge and I'm so grateful I ended up in her ADPR 221 class!
What classes are you taking this year? Any you're most excited for?
This semester, I am taking Mass Media and Law, Brands & Branding, Finance and Marketing. I've enjoyed my Brands & Branding class with Kelli because she forces us to think unconventionally about the branding process and I've already learned so much valuable information from that class.
Describe your current job/internship. Are there any other internships you've had throughout your time at CoJMC?
I'm currently interning at University Communications as a Project Management Intern where I work with clients and the internal team at UComm to strategize and complete project requests. Over the summer, I was an Account Services Intern at The Lacek Group, a loyalty marketing agency, in Minneapolis, Minnesota. I worked on three high-profile clients and managed projects from start to finish by working closely with creative directors, account directors and strategists.
Have you studied abroad—where, when, favorite city and memory?
I'll be studying abroad in Dublin, Ireland this spring!
Are there any organizations you're involved in on or off campus? Any other hobbies?
I'm the Vice President of Digital Communications for PRSSA. I'm also the Vice President of Public Relations for Kappa Delta. Also, I'm a member of the CoJMC's student advisory board.
Throw out a fun (maybe quirky) fact about you.
My favorite movies are the Transformers movies. Everyone always hates but the third one is the best and Shia Labeouf is an icon.
Are you working on any special projects?
I'm a writer for Adspire.us which is a platform meant to inspire and empower young women in the advertising field who might not know female leaders in our field. I write features about female industry leaders and their experiences and advice that will benefit younger women in the field.
Do you have any post graduation plans? If not don't stress—what would you like to do?
I'm a die-hard Minnesotan but I'm ready to try living on the east or west coast!
When you were little, what did you want to be when you grew up?
I wanted to be a veterinarian but I hate seeing animals in pain aka I'm a wimp.
What has been your favorite class at CoJMC? What about one outside of CoJMC?
My favorite class at the CoJMC has been ADPR 221 Strategic Writing and outside of the CoJMC it would have to be any Communication Studies classes - I love all of them!
Fill in the blank: "The best thing about being a Husker is ___________________."
all the valuable relationships you gain from your peers, professors, fans and all the like.
Advice for a new CoJMC student?
Never stop trying new things! Step out of your comfort zone and get involved in something you don't know anyone in or aren't sure that you might like. The more you try, the more you learn about yourself and what you want out of your college experience!"
