Victoria Baker's path to discovering her passion for advertising is unique, not to mention inspiring.
The May 2023 broadcasting graduate took her first advertising course this fall 2022. She was already a few months into her senior year, but Baker knew she needed to explore this career path further; so she applied to Jacht, UNL’s student-led advertising agency, hoping it could be her senior capstone class.

Fast forward to the start of the spring 2023 semester. Baker got the job at Jacht Agency as a copywriter, but imposter syndrome hit her hard. She felt intimidated as a broadcasting student working in this unfamiliar field.

“It was during my second week of Jacht when I realized that I had nothing to worry about," Baker said. "Everything was so collaborative in the ad space, and it didn't matter if I didn't know what I was doing—my team would help me figure it out."

That same week, Baker came to another realization. She could picture an exciting future for herself in advertising, so she finally pressed submit on her application to Ogilvy’s competitive creative internship program...and got the internship!

Ogilvy is a global leader in the ad agency space. They were recently named the most creative agency network in the world, for the third consecutive year, by World Advertising Research Center.

In the next few weeks, Baker will take the next big step in her career journey and move out west to work in the Ogilvy Los Angeles office as a copywriting intern.

"While I still don't know everything about advertising, what I do know is that I was always meant to be in this space. I was meant to find myself here, one way or another."

What's the best thing about being a husker?

The best thing about being a Husker is the campus community and all of the resources that are available for student success. I couldn't have graduated and got to this point without everyone, everything, and every program that assisted me- whether it was in academics, getting involved, or even work opportunities.

Who would you like to thank for supporting you throughout your college career?

I would like to thank the Director of New Student Enrollment, Jenni Brost. As both an Orientation Leader and Support Specialist, I was able to develop and practice my communication, facilitation, and collaboration skills. In NSE, I was able to connect with incoming students and make a real impact on them. It's been so rewarding to see how they become involved on campus or to see them thrive in their respective interests. I also built a community with more than 60 of the best leaders on UNL's campus. I also made the best, lifelong friends in NSE and for that, I'm forever grateful for Jenni Brost. Jenni cultivated a community in NSE where all feel welcomed to be their authentic selves. She builds communities founded on trust, understanding, and love for being a Husker. Jenni has taught me how to lead others with empathy, honor, and integrity. In general, she is also just a great person to talk to. Love her so much!
