Teaching News Terrifically in the 21st Century: Innovative Teaching Ideas for the Journalism Classroom

Panelist: Michelle Carr Hassler

In a time of constant change and adjustment in journalism education, the Newspaper and Online News Division of the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication has sponsored the Teaching News Terrifically in the 21st Century teaching ideas competition since 2009, seeking to highlight innovative approaches to teaching journalism. This year, we will be focusing our contest on ideas that focus on helping student journalists find ways to better connect with their communities. This panel will present teaching ideas that demonstrate effective ways to teach student journalists community engagement in a way that seeks to re-establish connections and restore trust with the people they serve, especially those communities that have traditionally been underrepresented.
