Karla Martinez, senior advertising and public relations major at the CoJMC, was recently accepted to the 2017 Multicultural Advertising Intern Program (MAIP). The program is sponsored by the American Association of Advertising Agencies (4As) and provides students with a full-time, paid internship.

The 4A’s Multicultural Advertising Intern Program (MAIP) connects aspiring diverse entry-level advertising professionals with prestigious advertising agencies. Since its inception in 1973, MAIP offers multicultural students a unique paid, full-time summer internship at 4A’s participating agencies nationwide blending real-world work experience, networking opportunities within the industry, and help gaining valuable professional credentials that position individuals better in the marketplace.

Martinez, a Lincoln native, will begin her internship this summer at Partners + Napier advertising agency in Rochester, New York. She said she is excited for this opportunity and is looking forward to what’s ahead.

“MAIP is one of the best internship programs in the country for students of color,” she said. “I’m excited to be representing as a Latina and as a University of Nebraska–Lincoln student. MAIP gives you that break into the advertising industry, and a lot of those who are now successful in the industry have gotten their start with this program.”

MAIP fellows also participate in a series of agency sponsored professional development workshops and seminars to further educate them on various advertising and media disciplines.

All fellows who successfully complete MAIP will attend The Face of Talent symposium at the end of the summer. The week includes an interactive forum for graduating MAIP fellows, a leadership luncheon for advertising professionals invested in MAIP and diversity and inclusion, a career fair and behind-the-scenes conversations with agency professionals.

Martinez said she looks forward to gaining new experiences in the advertising field over the course of the summer.

“I hope to gain agency experience, meet new people and connect with others in the MAIP network,” she said. “I also hope to build a strong connection with the people at Partners + Napier.”

After graduation this spring, Martinez hopes to work in strategy at an advertising agency.
