Associate Professor Sue Burzynski Bullard has announced she will pursue phased retirement. Bullard will move to a half-time appointment during the 2018-2019 and 2019-2020 academic years, before departing from the University in May 2020.

“Sue Bullard represents the pinnacle of excellence in journalism and mass communications education,” said Amy Struthers, interim dean of the College of Journalism and Mass Communications. “She has utilized her outstanding professional experience to provide students with a world-class education, to conduct research that directly impacts working journalists and to build a brighter future for the profession she loves.”

Bullard joined the University of Nebraska-Lincoln College of Journalism and Mass Communications (CoJMC)  in 2008. She teaches a variety of journalism courses focusing on editing, reporting and multimedia journalism. She is a passionate teacher who has earned many accolades over the years for her commitment to students. Notably, Bullard was the recipient of the 2010 Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communications (AEJMC) Promising Professor Award and the 2014 Society of Professional Journalists Distinguished Educator of the Year Award.

Bullard has been active in research related to editing, social media and journalism pedagogy. In 2011, she wrote “Everybody’s an Editor, Navigating Journalism’s Changing Landscape,” an e-textbook. She has published research on social media best practices and using games to teach grammar in such venues as Harvard University’s Nieman Reports, the American Copy Editors Society website and AEJMC publications.

In addition to teaching and research, Bullard has provided outstanding service to professional journalism. She serves on the executive committee of the ACES: The Society for Editing, where she has helped to establish a training alliance with the Poynter Institute. In 2007, she was presented with a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Society of Professional Journalists Detroit Chapter.

“Sue is one of those special faculty you want to clone,” said Mary Kay Quinlan, CoJMC associate dean and associate professor of journalism. “We deeply appreciate all she has done for our students, our faculty and the University. We wish her well in the next phase of life.”

Before joining University of Nebraska–Lincoln, Bullard was a reporter and editor at newspapers in Michigan and New York, including three years as managing editor of The Detroit News where she supervised 300 journalists producing both print and online editions.
