The Things We Hold Onto
Summary
Freshman Sierra Upah looks up at memorial stadium as she walks to Love Library to meet with friends, while wearing her father's Husker coat. "I remember going to a Husker football game when I was younger with my dad and seeing how loud the students and fans were, from that day on I wanted to be a Husker,” Upah said, “Wearing the coat takes to me back to my first day on campus and reminds me of how proud my father is and how far I have come."

Upah sits on her dorm couch listening to Tom Petty's album, "Highway Companion". "I often just sit in front of my record player and listen to music. No skips or no distractions its just me the music and my memories. I used to do it all of the time with my dad, so to be able to have my collection and own some of my dads' records makes me feel like I am the little girl again sitting in front of the record player, no skips or distractions just music," said Upah.

Jodi Soptic grabs a "snowball cookie" from a tin sent by her parents while working on homework at her desk. "During the holidays, my family and I used to bake, what we called, snowball cookies all together every year. Now that I have moved three hours away, eating the cookies alone in my dorm room makes me feel like we are all together again under the same roof again.”

Soptic folds her laundry on her dorm room floor. “Me and my mom have been best friends ever since I was little, I used to look a photos of her wearing the same items when she was my ago and thinking I wanted to be just like her,” Soptic said, “I’m glad she gave them to me because, they have become my comfort clothes and without them I would be lost.”

Ty Demand takes a photo of his friends with his digital camera. "When I was younger, all of my favorite family photos were taken on a digital camera, you would take the photo to capture the moment with no other distractions and nobody cared what they looked like because they were all in the moment,” Demand said “I want to do the same with my friends to recreate those kinds of memories.”

Demand and his friends, (left) Marcus Keoseter and (right) Brayden Phillips, play Mario Kart on Keosters Wii in his dorm room. "As a kid, I always went over to my best friend's basement and played games on the Wii for hours. Since then, I have grown up and moved away to college, and built new relationships with the people around me. I cannot believe 12 years later, I am in my college dorm room doing the same thing with the people who make me the happiest," said Demand.

Freshman Ben Kresl takes time to himself for the night to pick back up on old hobbies, like his guitar in his dorm room at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. "I grew up playing many instruments, but after my family fell on hard times, we had to start selling instruments to pay for our necessities. Luckily, my guitar was the last one left before my family became financially secure again. Playing my guitar again takes me back to when I was younger," said Kresl.

Kresl paints a shoe at his desk after practicing his guitar. "I have been working on these shoes throughout the semester whenever I have free time, like tonight. Painting my shoes and being creative makes me feel like a kid again, when not so many things were expected of me,” said Kresl.

Liz Leurs pins a handwritten quote from her favorite children's book given to her by her mother on her dorm room corkboard. "My mother was always the parent to stick by my side. Every night she read me "book title" to help me fall asleep and remind me how much she loved me. I am getting this tattooed on me in the next month to keep this memory with me forever and hopefully share with others."

Leurhs's Crocs sit at the edge of her bed as she prepares for bed on her dorm room floor. "I am so glad Crocs came back into style; as a kid, when I would visit my grandparents, they were all I would wear at the lake. Today wearing them makes me feel like I can be that little girl who would not care if her hair was messy or would not mind a little grass stain on my knees," said Leurhs.
