Dean's Update January 2021

Friday, January 22, 2021 - 12:45pm
Dear Alumni and Friends,

Andersen Hall is once again buzzing with the excitement of a new semester! After an extended winter break, students will finally be returning to campus this week.
During the break, we were busy teaching engaging pop-up classes, designing new special topic classes, wrapping up research and creative projects, and interviewing finalists for our six faculty positions.

While we’ll have to wait until the fall to welcome our new faculty to campus, I’m delighted to introduce you to two new members of the CoJMC Family who joined us the end of last year. Jeremy Lohrman was named director of development and Karez Hassan joined our advising team. Please help us welcome Jeremy and Karez!

We also said goodbye and good luck at the end of 2020 to Professor Gary Kebbel who retired after 10 years in the College, two as dean. Professor Kebbel was a driving force behind several of our most prominent programs. He helped establish the Nebraska News Service, Jacht Ad Agency, Drone Journalism, the MobileMe&You Conference, Global Virtual Classrooms, and much more. He pushed us to experiment and try new things, and we are a stronger and more innovative college thanks to his leadership. Congratulations on your retirement, Gary!

Congratulations are also in order to several of our faculty who are launching new programs of research, to our outstanding alumni who are making big career moves and to our superstar public relations, advertising and journalism/broadcasting students who are winning awards and joining prestigious programs. Read more about their accomplishments below.

Last, but not least, thank you to our friends at Bailey Lauerman for establishing the new Bailey Lauerman Fund for Student Opportunity to promote and celebrate the diversity of people and ideas in advertising and public relations. The first Bailey Lauerman Scholarship will be awarded this spring.

Every scholarship awarded moves a student one step closer to their dream career. Learn more about how you can make a difference for a future Husker!

Go Big Red!

Shari
