University of Nebraska-Lincoln students Kylie Graham of Olathe, Kansas, Brenda Maytorena of Puebla City, Mexico, and Natalie Saenz of Scottsbluff were chosen as student fellows for the Carnegie-Knight News21 Program at Arizona State University. During the spring semester of 2021, they’ll attend a weekly virtual seminar led by News21 Executive Editor Jacqueline Petchel, a former senior editor for investigations and enterprise at the Houston Chronicle.

The seminar allows students to be fully immersed in learning about topics they’ll be reporting on during their 10 weeks in the digital newsroom at the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication this summer. Cronkite School is located on ASU’s campus where fellows will work with Pulitzer Prize-winning journalists and other media and communications experts to produce projects that will be distributed nationally.

“We’re proud to be associated with a nationally acclaimed program like News21,” CoJMC Dean Shari Veil said. “To have three of our brightest and hard-working student journalists accepted into the program is an honor, and we’re looking forward to seeing their work at Cronkite.”

Graduates of the News21 program have gone on to work at some of the country’s largest newsrooms, including The New York Times, NPR, Bloomberg and Politico.
