Obituary: JL (John) Schmidt

JL (John) Schmidt, 77, was born December 20, 1946, in Scottsbluff, Nebr., and passed to eternity April 21, 2024. A Scottsbluff native and 1976 University of Nebraska-Lincoln College of Journalism graduate, Schmidt began his newspaper career at The Daily Nebraskan in 1966. He worked as a reporter, copy editor, business manager and night news editor.

Arielle Wiedenbeck speaks at Public Relations Society of America’s ICON Conference

Arielle Wiedenbeck graduated from the College of Journalism and Mass Communications in May 2021. While at Andersen Hall she studied advertising and public relations and political science. She was also the creative director for 2020-2021 UNL Public Relations Students Society of America Bateman Team. The team won second place in the national competition with their project “The Civility Effect”.

It captures the untold stories of women across time who used graphic design to earn a living while changing the world.

Fantasy Sports to legalized betting, a recent study examines the possibility

A recent study, “A Shaky Bet: Legalized Sports Betting in the United States,” examined the attitudes of fantasy sports players to determine their likelihood to adopt legalized sports betting after the U.S. Supreme Court struck down the federal ban on sports betting in May 2018.

This Friday is the Experience Lab Ribbon Cutting. I don’t know if I can fully express how proud I am of our college as we prepare for this exciting event. Faculty, staff and students have dedicated an incredible amount of time and energy launching the Experience Lab this fall. Through all the confusion of Covid, curriculum changes and construction plans, they have been laser focused on our vision to be a leader in experiential journalism and mass communications education.

Assistant professor of journalism Chris Graves wasn’t expecting to walk away with the phone number of international country star Garth Brooks the night before his concert in Lincoln this August. Graves attended Brooks' press conference on Aug. 13 and the Memorial Stadium concert the following night to write a story for “Nebraska Quarterly,” the University of Nebraska-Lincoln’s alumni magazine.

Kelli Britten named AAF Lieutenant Governor

Assistant professor of practice Kelli Britten was named the Lieutenant Governor for the American Advertising Federation (AAF) District 9. She'll also serve on N3AC, the AAF National Advertising Awards Committee. In this role she is responsible for the district AAF competition as well as supporting AAF clubs in Nebraska, Iowa, Kansas and Missouri.
