Lindemann wins the 2024 Grimes Memorial Competition

The University of Nebraska-Lincoln College of Journalism and Mass Communications announced on March 27 that Marissa Lindemann is the 2024 George and Eva Grimes Memorial Competition winner. Lindemann is a sophomore broadcasting and journalism double major from Des Moines, Iowa.

Seven join the Experience Lab as Professionals in Residence

Seven more area professionals have joined the College of Journalism and Mass Communications as professionals in residence (PIRs) as part of a new college-wide experiential program in fall 2021. Shaun Cummins, senior technical Director at KLKN-TV, Geoffrey Roth, senior director of news at KMTV, Derek Hernandez, director of brand & content at Mentor Collective, Serese Cole, morning news anchor at KMTV, Beau Poehlman, video production manager at Ameritas, Randy Hawthorne, product manager at Nelnet and Mikel Lauber, director of news at 10/11 News, KSNB Local 4 and KNOP News 2 will work with students this fall. The new PIRs join Keri Mesropov, president and chief talent officer of TRG Arts, Kelley Peterson, vice president and nonprofit creative director at KidGlov and Andrew Ward, morning show host and former sports director for Lincoln’s Channel 8 News.

Growth Mindset with Anne McConkey

We know that many of you are in the midst of preparing to send your student to their first semester of college: paperwork, To Do lists, final family vacation, immunizations records, sheets that fit, raincoat, lunchbox….oh wait, that’s kindergarten…wasn’t that just yesterday? (Kinda bittersweet -  we get it.) We, the CoJMC advisors, have also been busy preparing for their arrival. Every fall semester we teach a course called JOMC 100 First Year Experience.  It is designed to help first year students acclimate to college life.  In addition to covering important topics like study skills and time management, we will be introducing the subject of a growth mindset, which encourages students to rethink their beliefs about intelligence and ability.

Dean's Update June 2021

This morning I met with the 20 students who will be launching our pilot program for the Experience Lab in the fall. These already impressive young professionals are spending their summer learning to lead. They recently completed the CliftonStrengths assessment, and over the next couple days, they will work with alumna and TRG Arts President Keri Mesporov to identify strategies to leverage their strengths and come together as a team.

Associate professor of broadcasting Trina Creighton will retire from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln on August 20, 2021. Her commitment to her students and her passion and devotion to diversity, equity and inclusion are values that Trina Creighton brought to the classroom during her time at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln College of Journalism and Mass Communications.

2021 Prism Awards

Students, alumni and faculty earn recognition at AMA Lincoln’s Prism Awards

The Lincoln chapter of the American Marketing Association held their annual Prism awards to celebrate the strength and innovation of Lincoln’s marketers on Thursday, June 17. Each year, an AMA chapter from another city judges award entries from local agencies and corporate marketing teams, identifying winners for the merit and Prism awards.

Two Huskers place as runners-up in the Hearst Journalism Awards National Championships

May 2021 graduates Luke Mullin and Natalie Saenz both placed as runners-up in their respective categories of the Hearst Journalism Awards National Championships. Mullin was a runner-up in the Hearst National Writing Competition and Saenz was a runner-up in the National Audio Championship. Saenz also received the Best Use of Audio for News Coverage Award during the competition.
