Obituary: JL (John) Schmidt

JL (John) Schmidt, 77, was born December 20, 1946, in Scottsbluff, Nebr., and passed to eternity April 21, 2024. A Scottsbluff native and 1976 University of Nebraska-Lincoln College of Journalism graduate, Schmidt began his newspaper career at The Daily Nebraskan in 1966. He worked as a reporter, copy editor, business manager and night news editor.

Four more Lincoln-area professionals have joined the Experience Lab as professionals in residence (PIRs) at the College of Journalism and Mass Communications. Sports editor of the Seward County Independent, Stephanie Croston, co-host of Severe and Benning in the Morning at NRG Media Omaha, Mike’l Severe, studio/remote production supervisor at Nebraska Public Media, Ryan Dobesh, and sports reporter at The Omaha World-Herald, Dirk Chatelain, will work with students this fall. Professionals will work one-on-one with program participants to provide mentorship and feedback.

Marron wins the Donna Allen Award for Feminist Advocacy

Professor of journalism Maria Marron was honored with the Donna Allen Award for Feminist Advocacy by the Commission on the Status of Women, during the annual (virtual) convention of the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication's (AEJMC).

Dean's Update July 2021

The lease is signed, and the moving truck is ready. At the end of this week, we will be expanding the footprint of the College of Journalism and Mass Communications across Centennial Mall to the third floor of the Children’s Museum. We’re adding over 13,000 square feet dedicated to the Experience Lab, including space for our advertising and public relations agencies, Jacht and Buoy, and our new economic and community development-focused webzine, Heartland.

The College of Journalism and Mass Communications is searching for new faculty and staff to support our recently approved strategic plan. The new positions will contribute to the launch of the Experience Lab, our exploration of alternative business models for local and community journalism and the expansion of research and creative activity in the college. We are searching for three faculty positions, including an assistant professor of media law, an assistant professor of practice in media production and an associate dean for research and faculty affairs, and a staff technical director.

Seven join the Experience Lab as Professionals in Residence

Seven more area professionals have joined the College of Journalism and Mass Communications as professionals in residence (PIRs) as part of a new college-wide experiential program in fall 2021. Shaun Cummins, senior technical Director at KLKN-TV, Geoffrey Roth, senior director of news at KMTV, Derek Hernandez, director of brand & content at Mentor Collective, Serese Cole, morning news anchor at KMTV, Beau Poehlman, video production manager at Ameritas, Randy Hawthorne, product manager at Nelnet and Mikel Lauber, director of news at 10/11 News, KSNB Local 4 and KNOP News 2 will work with students this fall. The new PIRs join Keri Mesropov, president and chief talent officer of TRG Arts, Kelley Peterson, vice president and nonprofit creative director at KidGlov and Andrew Ward, morning show host and former sports director for Lincoln’s Channel 8 News.
