Obituary: JL (John) Schmidt

JL (John) Schmidt, 77, was born December 20, 1946, in Scottsbluff, Nebr., and passed to eternity April 21, 2024. A Scottsbluff native and 1976 University of Nebraska-Lincoln College of Journalism graduate, Schmidt began his newspaper career at The Daily Nebraskan in 1966. He worked as a reporter, copy editor, business manager and night news editor.

Joe Weber authors book on Clayton Yeutter

Associate professor of journalism Joe Weber recently released his new book “Rhymes with Fighter: Clayton Yeutter, American Statesman” with University Nebraska Press.

The book launch was held at the Sheldon Art Gallery in Lincoln on Thursday, Nov. 4, 2021, and also featured former trade negotiators Warren Maruyama and Darci Vetter who spoke on the future of global trade and the impact Yeutter left on the industry.

A recent study, “’We Matter’: Cultural Significance of a Counter-Narrative Black Public Affairs Program,” examines the impact of “Awareness,” the longest-running Black Public Affairs show in the U.S., launched in Columbia, South Carolina, after the civil rights movement.

Students practice broadcasting Esports at on-campus tournament

The University of Nebraska-Lincoln campus recreation center and e-sports club held a “Super Smash Showdown” Nintendo Switch tournament during the fall semester. When the showdown coordinators reached out to assistant professor of practice Alan Eno to see if there were students interested in broadcasting the event, Eno jumped at the chance.
