Obituary: JL (John) Schmidt

JL (John) Schmidt, 77, was born December 20, 1946, in Scottsbluff, Nebr., and passed to eternity April 21, 2024. A Scottsbluff native and 1976 University of Nebraska-Lincoln College of Journalism graduate, Schmidt began his newspaper career at The Daily Nebraskan in 1966. He worked as a reporter, copy editor, business manager and night news editor.

Everding awarded a Hitchcock Fellowship

UNL’s 2022 Bateman Competition Team announced

The University of Nebraska–Lincoln College of Journalism and Mass Communications has selected six students for UNL’s 2022 Bateman Case Study Competition team. The Bateman Case Study Competition is a national case study competition, hosted by the Public Relations Student Society of America, for public relations students.

Happy Thanksgiving! I am thankful for our faculty and staff who have worked so hard this year to support and encourage our students through the ongoing pandemic. I am also thankful for our dedicated alumni and industry partners who have supported our work and cheered us on as we cut the ribbon on the Experience Lab, launched Heartland Webzine and Nebraska Nightly, welcomed incredible alums back to campus and celebrated the achievements of our hardworking faculty. Thank you to everyone who engaged in and supported these endeavors.

Jacht hosts alumna Mekita Rivas for First-Gen Celebration Week

Rivas spoke to UNL students at the Agency for “A Conversation with Mekita Rivas” on Nov. 10 and at the City Union on Nov. 11 for the First Gen Speaker Series.
