Dear Alumni and Friends,
For our students, the start of the fall semester is filled with excitement and new opportunities. For our alumni, the start of the new school year likely stirs up fond memories of what college life was like “back in the day.” In my visits with alumni, I’ve heard stories of nefarious activities between the Kissing Columns, late-night food runs while live on KRNU and incredible newsroom take-overs during summer reporting classes. However, my favorite stories are about the impact our professors have had on the lives and livelihoods of students. Inspired by a conversation with 1969 grad Glenn Friendt, we collected stories about the impact Professor Al Book had on his students over the years. I hope you enjoy the stories as much as I did!
We have 165 new freshmen whose lives will be impacted by our incredible faculty and professionals-in-residence. Thanks to recruiting events like the Summer Showcase, J-Camp and Digital Media Camp, we have 94 Nebraskans and a whopping 71 out-of-state students (30.3% increase over last year) in this freshmen class. Check out our 2022 Recruitment Report to learn more about our new students.
Our returning students and recent grads are also doing big things, like attending the SPJ Student Leadership Institute, receiving scholarships from the Nebraska chapter of the American Advertising Federation, winning an Edward R. Murrow Award and multiple Gold NBA Pinnacle Awards.
Of course, our faculty are also showing off. You can watch Rick Alloway’s NBA Hall of Fame induction video and learn more about research and creative work presented by our faculty during the AEJMC Conference in Detroit.
We conducted informational interviews during the AEJMC conference for our six new faculty positions. These new faculty lines will help us build on our strategic priorities in the college. This Strategic Plan Report outlines our progress toward the 2025 goals.
Mark your calendars to join us for Knowledge on Tap with Dana and Lynn Roper Visiting Sportswriter Thomas Horky on Sept. 15 and Chicago Drinks with Dean on Sept. 20. Our Homecoming Celebration will be Sept. 30, and I’ll host another Drinks with the Dean in NYC on Oct. 10. If you’re interested in learning what the arrival of 5G capabilities will mean for journalism, advertising and public relations, register for the upcoming Mobile Me&You Conference scheduled for Oct. 20-22.
Last, but not least, check out these Huskers on the Move, and let us know if you’ve made a recent career move. We would love to hear from you!
Go Big Red!
