College of Journalism and Mass Communications junior Lauren Penington of Parker, Colorado, was selected to attend the Society of Professional Journalists (SPJ) Student Leadership Institute.

At Nebraska, the advertising and public relations and political science double major is vice president of the Society of Professional Journalists student club. Penington was one of 23 students from across the country selected to attend the second annual SPJ Student Leadership Institute.

The Student Leadership Institute was in Morgantown, Indiana, the weekend of July 8-10. Students learned to understand and apply the SPJ Code of Ethics in order to become more credible and ethical journalists.

Students learned the skills needed to be successful in an ever-changing and complex field from professionals currently working in journalism. Through a series of workshops they practiced leadership and explored what it means to contribute to a news team.

The 23 students also had the chance to network with journalism industry leaders and were invited to further strengthen their network at MediaFest 2022, this year’s SPJ national convention, on Oct. 27-30 in Washington, D.C.

“I am so grateful for the opportunity to learn and grow alongside other student journalists from colleges and universities across the country,” Penington said. “Thank you to SPJ and the Scripps Howard Foundation for the opportunity and thank you to the faculty at the College of Journalism and Mass Communications for their support.”
