A few weeks ago, CoJMC Professor Joe Starita attended the installation of a statue of Chief Standing Bear at the United States Capitol. It was an emotional ceremony and tears were shed by most everyone who attended. In this photo, Starita is standing in front of the statue with Judi gaiaskibos, executive director of Nebraska Commission on Indian Affiars. Starita is the author of one of the preeminent biographies of Standing Bear, “I Am a Man”: Chief Standing Bear’s Journey for Justice.

Grace Gorenflo: Student Spotlight

Sep 24 2019 - 7:00pm

Junior Journalism student, Grace Gorenflo, loves editing so much that she edits her friends papers for fun! She’s also traveling to Luxembourg this winter to receive dual citizenship and her pipe dream is to own a small publication in Colorado where a large part of her family lives.

When we asked Grace if she had any plans for the future her immediate reply was “moving to Seattle”. It’s a lifelong dream that she plans to fulfill, and even if she can’t find work at her dream jobs—The Seattle Times or KUOW—she’ll freelance. Another fun fact about Grace is that although she’s a writer at heart (she’s the news editor at The Daily Nebraskan) she also LOVES graphic design.

Grace’s favorite thing about being a Husker is that she’s part of a caring community and that’s something she won’t forget when she leaves Nebraska. “I feel like everyone from our professors to our administration really does fight for us to succeed.”

Eric Gerrard: Alumni Spotlight

Sep 5 2019 - 12:30pm
CoJMC Alumni, Eric Gerrard was an advertising and public relations major during his time at the J school. One of his favorite experiences was the summer he had an internship in Hawaii (that professor Nancy Mitchell helped him get!). Today Eric works with a lobbying firm in Lincoln called American Communications Group. He also has his own small law firm called Eric Gerrard LLC.

Eric can confirm that Mass Media Law (JOMC 486) is an extremely valuable course and one of the most relevant in the world of advertising. “Lobbying and advocating seems like a perfect mix of my advertising and legal background, so I feel very fortunate.”

Irwin Qi: Student Spotlight

Sep 3 2019 - 5:00pm
When we ask our student spotlight’s if they’ve ever studied abroad, a lot of them will say they’ve been to places like London, Barcelona or Dublin. But Irwin Qi (second from left) gets to say that he’s currently on his study abroad trip while at UNL because he’s from Xi’an China.

Back home, Irwin’s major was New Media Studies and our Advertising and Public Relations major is very similar. Irwin also added on a Digital Humanities minor to really set himself apart from others in his major.

Irwin previously took an Interactive Design class with professor Adam Wagler and from that, he gets to work with Adam on a UCARE project focusing on UX Design in VR/AR. Sounds like a fun and busy semester, Irwin!

Molly Meysenburg: Student Spotlight

Aug 27 2019 - 2:15pm
Almost four years ago when senior Advertising and Public Relations student Molly Meysenburg attended Red Letter Day, she was an undecided major. She ultimately decided to join the CoJMC Family because every person she met at the J school was so eager to tell her about the cutting edge work they were doing. She loved the enthusiasm and excitement CoJMC students showed for their courses and she wanted that feeling too!

This Fall, Molly is a social media strategist at Jacht, our student run ad agency. She's excited to work with real clients on some new projects. She's even more thrilled to be able to get know more of her classmates and make connections with people who love #ADPR as much as she does.
