Obituary: JL (John) Schmidt

JL (John) Schmidt, 77, was born December 20, 1946, in Scottsbluff, Nebr., and passed to eternity April 21, 2024. A Scottsbluff native and 1976 University of Nebraska-Lincoln College of Journalism graduate, Schmidt began his newspaper career at The Daily Nebraskan in 1966. He worked as a reporter, copy editor, business manager and night news editor.

Huskers earn seven awards in the National Undergraduate Student Electronic Media Competition

On March 31, College of Journalism and Mass Communications students took home seven awards in the National Undergraduate Student Electronic Media Competition. The competition was held during the annual National Broadcasting Society convention.

Three CoJMC faculty earn promotion

Three faculty in the College of Journalism and Mass Communications earned promotions in 2022. Joseph Weber, the Jerry and Karla Huse Professor of News-Editorial, earned a promotion from associate to full professor. Alan Eno and Katie Krcmarik earned promotions from assistant to associate professors of practice.

A second Checkout Room opens in the Agency

The College of Journalism and Mass Communications opened a second checkout room in the Agency last week to serve current college majors. The new Checkout Room is located on the third floor of the Lincoln Children’s Museum.

Keri Mesropov wins Women of Courage, Character, and Commitment award

Keri Mesropov, 1992 graduate and president and chief talent officer, TRG Arts, received the 2022 Women of Courage, Character, and Commitment award. This award, which is presented by the University of Nebraska-Lincoln Women’s Center, recognizes students, faculty or staff who have made a positive impact through professional, personal, mentoring or peer relationships.

Newsrooms across the country have faced cutbacks, layoffs and closures. News desserts have grown, and reliable news and information can be hard to find. To survive and thrive, the journalism industry must innovate and change.
