In the College of Journalism and Mass Communications, we nurture curious and creative minds to thrive in the ever-changing media and communication professions. Our vision is to be a national leader in experiential journalism and mass communication education. To realize that vision, we are investing in our future and our “Do from Day One” approach, grounded in hard work, collaborative problem-solving and the ethical pursuit of truth to uphold democracy.
In 2022, we taught new courses on Trusting News in a Hyper-polarized Era, Social Media Data Mining, Racial Reckoning in Sports Culture and the Changing Business Models of News. We welcomed high-profile guest speakers to campus through the Seline Lecture Series and Roper Visiting Professorship. We hosted a congressional debate, promoted Democracy Day and covered election night in Nebraska. We also covered high school and Husker sports across our media outlets and worked with community businesses and nonprofit organizations in our student-run agencies and webzine.

Don and Lorena Meier Studio ribbon-cutting celebrates 'Wild Kingdom' legacy and the future of media
A $755,000 pledge from the Donald and Lorena Meier Foundation of Chicago to the University of Nebraska– Lincoln’s College of Journalism and Mass Communications supported the construction of a new television studio and newsroom.
Sale of $4.65 million farmlands supports depth reporting
A Nebraska family that built its farmlands into a multi-million dollar enterprise near Hebron gifted the land to the University of Nebraska-Lincoln College of Journalism and Mass Communications. The proceeds from the $4.65 million sale of the farmlands will establish the Deepe Family Endowed Chairs in Depth Reporting.
Perry studio and classroom open for students
This fall, students in the College of Journalism and Mass Communications won’t have to find space for photo shoots and interviews. A new digital photography studio and multimedia classroom opened in the Agency, located on the third floor of the Lincoln Children’s Museum, on Aug. 22.
Pepsi-Cola of Lincoln sponsors new sports media learning lab at CoJMC
The area that once housed Andersen Hall’s second-floor television studio has been converted into an open-concept sports media learning lab with the support of Pepsi-Cola of Lincoln. The multimedia classroom is a hub for all things Nebraska Sports and home to the College of Journalism and Mass Communications Experience Lab Unlimited Sports.

Social justice course produces podcast to combat Nebraska prison injustices
In Spring 2022, 165 students in the Social Justice, Human Rights and the Media class produced a podcast with the goal of elevating voices and stories that are often left out of mainstream media.
Press Box learning community first to travel since the start of the pandemic
On April 30, the College of Journalism and Mass Communications Learning Community the “Press Box” traveled to Kansas City, Missouri and Kansas. The six students, in addition to Press Box mentor Alex Neill and adviser Alex Fernando, toured the Negro League Baseball Museum, visited the College Basketball Experience and attended a Sporting KC Soccer game.
Sports media and communication students and faculty to travel to Spain
For nearly three weeks in the summer of 2022, CoJMC students traveled throughout Spain participating in a 3-credit class led by sports media and communication associate professor, John Shrader.
Husker creates business to explore career interests and help fellow students
Sophomore advertising and public relations major and entrepreneurship minor Aditi Gunda launched her business, a videocast series called “The Business Takeaway” (TBT), at the start of 2022. Gunda was struggling to figure out a career path because she had so many interests in the public relations field.
New course explores the changing business of news
A new course in the college brought together students and journalism thought leaders to explore alternative business models to support the future of journalism. Joe Weber, Jerry and Karla Huse Professor of News-Editorial, led the course. Weber engaged both Nebraska and national organizations to join the conversation.
Jacht & Nebraska Based Agencies Create Community Partnership Focused on Professional Development
Jacht Ad Agency, the student-run advertising agency at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, will be partnering with Artillery Media Co., redthread and Swanson Russell to provide professional development opportunities through micro-internships and mentorship programs.

The Nebraska News Service provides coverage of Nebraska State Government along with news from Lincoln, Omaha and rural Nebraska. The student-run news organization also provides coverage to more than 100 Nebraska media outlets through its state-wide wire service. 90.3 KRNU is the University of Nebraska-Lincoln student-run radio station, providing alternative music, news, sports and specialty shows to the campus community. In 2022, 90.3 KRNU celebrated 52 years on the air. The weekly podcast, 93 Counties, is hosted by CoJMC students. Each episode is a story from one of the 93 counties in Nebraska, from the panhandle to the Missouri River.

Evelyn Mejia was selected to participate in the inaugural New York Times Corps. Mejia was one of 20 aspiring journalists chosen from among hundreds of applicants nationwide. Mejia is a junior journalism and advertising and public relations double major from Norfolk.

Jones receives Fulbright Global Scholar Award
Fred & Gladys Seaton Professor Valerie Jones received a Fulbright Global Scholar Award on April 1 to study the use of emergent technology in facilitating social connectedness for aging adults in the United States and Australia. She is the first professor from the UNL College of Journalism and Mass Communications to be named a Fulbright Scholar since 1999.

Knowledge on Tap is a monthly series where faculty present their latest research and creative activity and then lead a discussion exploring the latest trends and techniques in advertising, broadcasting, journalism, public relations and sports media.
Drinks with the Dean brings CoJMC to alumni
In 2022, Dean Shari Veil hosted Drinks with the Dean events in cities throughout the United States.
These small informal gatherings provide the college a chance to connect with alumni, learn about their career paths and their successes. Alumni also learn about current happenings and future plans in the college.
This year, Dean Veil hosted alumni in Chicago, Atlanta, St. Petersburg, Florida, New York City, Kansas City, Nashville, Detroit, Denver, Omaha, Los Angeles and Dallas.
CoJMC welcomes alumni back to Andersen Hall for Homecoming
It has been difficult to get together since the onset of the coronavirus pandemic. But the college was able to bring together faculty, staff and alumni for a homecoming celebration.
More than 100 joined the event in the lobby of Andersen Hall on Friday, Sept. 30, to bask in their pride of being Huskers and see the renovations underway in Andersen Hall during 2021.
Attendees got a sneak peek of Don and Lorena Meier Studio, the Unlimited Sports Lab and the Perry Multimedia Classroom and Photo Studio.

The College of Journalism and Mass Communications welcomed Norberto (Rob) Ayala-Flores, a 1984 graduate, as one of UNL’s Distinguished Alumni at the Multicultural Homecoming events from Sept. 29 to Oct. 1, hosted by the Chancellor’s Commission on the Status of People of Color and the Nebraska Alumni Association.
