Dean's Update: April 2023

Wednesday, April 26, 2023 - 10:00am

Dear Alumni and Friends,

Tomorrow evening we will celebrate the incomparable Marylou Luther Imparato (’51) at her book signing event at the Cosmopolitan Club in New York City. Marylou's incredible career as a revered fashion journalist has spanned the last seven decades. Her new book, Be-Spoke, includes quotes from Coco Chanel, Yves Saint Laurent, Marc Jacobs, Karl Lagerfeld and so many more. If you're in New York this week, please join us!

On Monday, May 8, the Nebraska Coast Connection presents the Hollywood Salon Comes Home from 6-7:30 p.m. in the Johnny Carson Center for Emerging Media. The event will feature a conversation and Q&A with two Nebraska friends who made their careers in Hollywood: Kearney native Jon Bokenkamp (Creator, Writer/Producer of NBC’s “The Blacklist” and showrunner of a new Apple TV series) and CoJMC alum Todd Nelson (CBS/Paramount Producer and Founder of Nebraska Coast Connection). If you're not in Lincoln, don't worry, our media production students, led by Technical Director Jamie Wenz, will live stream the event at https://nebraskacoast.com.

Check out the new CoJMC swag from our Raygun store. I was sporting my Nebraska Needs Journalists sweatshirt the other day and received several compliments! Whether your major was journalism (Democracy Depends on Me), broadcasting (I Have a Face for Radio), sports media (Let's Talk about Sports) or advertising/public relations (Life's a Pitch), we've got fun swag to show your J-school pride. All proceeds go to the CoJMC N Fund.

Our media production students and news crew were busy last week as we hosted the Lincoln Mayoral Debate, carried live on KLKN. Our public relations and advertising students have also been busy building the "pawfect" campaign and showing off their work in Buoy and Jacht.

Thanks to a wonderful gift from alum Dick Worick, we were able to welcome Jennifer Urich, CEO and co-founder of Sparrow Strategy, as this year’s Worick Visiting Professor in Market Research. Urich visited numerous classes, sharing her strategic expertise and engaging with students. Check out the video she created about her experience on campus!

We also recently welcomed Deputy Democracy Director Jenna Johnson ('07) from the Washington Post for the 2023 Seline Lecture. In addition to the lecture, Jenna also met with students in the Experience Lab and Daily Nebraskan. We are grateful to the Seline Family for supporting the lecture series.

This newsletter features alumni spotlights on Holly Hanau, Sylvia Stone and Lindsey Wilkinson. We also celebrate our recent winners of the SPJ Mark of Excellence AwardsMidwest Broadcasters Eric Severeid Awards, American Advertising Awards, Roper Sports Writing Competition and recent teaching and scholarship awards.

We are gearing up for graduation next month, which means we also get to announce this year's Chancellor's Scholars and officer elections. We're expecting another record graduating class-- more to come on that next month.

Finally, I'm sad to share that Nebraska Public Media giant and dear friend of the college Ron Hull passed away. His memorial will be Saturday, April 28.

As always, if have questions about the college or just want to connect, please let me know.

Go Big Red!

Shari
