Dean's Update: April 2024

We had packed house over the weekend as alums traveled across the country to celebrate the life and legacy of Professor George Tuck. Speakers included CoJMC alums Jennifer Gutierrez (‘90), Mike Theiler (‘76), Julia Dean (‘92), Joel Sartore (‘85) and George and Mary Lynn’s dear friend Sherri Johnson. Karez Hassan

Welcome, Karez!

Karez Hassan has joined the CoJMC advising team! Karez was previously an academic advisor in the College of Architecture. She has also worked as an intern for Career Services and as a GA in the College of Engineering's advising office. She earned an M.A. in Educational Administration and a B.A. in Psychology, both from UNL.

Two Nebraska students chosen for Most Promising Multicultural Student program

Congratulations to two CoJMC alumni on making big strides in their careers. Ronald Ng joined MRM, a marketing agency and part of McCann Worldgroup, as their new global chief creative officer, and Jeff Zeleny has been named chief national affairs correspondent at CNN.

Three students earn reporting positions with News21

University of Nebraska-Lincoln students Kylie Graham of Olathe, Kansas, Brenda Maytorena of Puebla City, Mexico, and Natalie Saenz of Scottsbluff were chosen as student fellows for the Carnegie-Knight News21 Program at Arizona State University. During the spring semester of 2021, they’ll attend a weekly virtual seminar led by News21 Executive Editor Jacqueline Petchel, a former senior editor for investigations and enterprise at the Houston Chronicle.

Gary Kebbel

Gary Kebbel announces retirement after 10 years at CoJMC

Journalism Prof. Gary Kebbel has retired after 10 years in the College of Journalism and Mass Communications, two as dean. As a faculty member, Kebbel was a grant partner with the Asian American Journalism Association and the National Lesbian and Gay Journalists Association to embed a diversity reporter in the college for a year. He received grants from UNL and from the Stevens Initiative (run by the Aspen Institute) to create a global news class where his students talked weekly with students in Oman about world issues. He also created classes in mobile media and in social media event planning.

PRSSA, Bateman and Jacht win 11 Paper Anvil Awards

“I’m very proud of these hardworking students,” Griffin said. “Many of these initiatives were completed at the peak of the pandemic, and these student leaders pushed forward and truly shined during a period of great adversity.”

Lisa Crawford

Grad Profile: Lisa Crawford

Lisa Crawford earned her masters of arts in professional journalism from University of Nebraska-Lincoln COJMC Graduate Programs this weekend.
 
She's the public affairs specialist for Nebraska National Guard and hopes to soon teach english, journalism or communications at a local college in Lincoln.
 
Post graduation Lisa is taking time to reflect on her accomplishments. This is the first time since she first began her education journey in 2005 that she hasn't been working towards a degree.

Gabriel Vegas Valente

Grad Spotlight: Gabriel Vegas Valente

When Gabriel Vegas Valente was 17 he moved to Nebraska from Santos, São Paulo, Brazil to begin his college career at University of Nebraska-Lincoln.
 
While at UNL he majored in sports media communication and business administration, he earned two undergraduate degrees this weekend.
 
As the co-founder of the Brazilian Student Organization at Nebraska (BRASA), Gabriel is passionate about sharing Brazil's beauty with the world. Read more about Gabriel's involvements.

Grad Spotlight: Grace Trexel

Grace Trexel is a journalism graduate who's started her own photography business Grace Trexel Photography. She's the oldest of six children and is proud to be a first generation college graduate.
