Recent faculty accomplishments

College of Journalism and Mass Communications faculty have achieved several noteworthy accomplishments including earning grants to support curriculum development and scholarship and publishing a new book.  

Students and alumni win at 2021 Nebraska American Advertising Awards

The University of Nebraska-Lincoln College of Journalism and Mass Communications had a strong presence at the 2021 Nebraska American Advertising Awards on Feb. 18. CoJMC students brought home 12 awards (eight silver and four gold). CoJMC alums Tyler Loebig and Madeline Christensen of the Lincoln-based agency Pixel Bakery, were honored by AAF Lincoln as the Ad Rookies of the Year. Student winners watched the ceremony virtually at a watch party hosted by the college.

Andy Jacobs places ninth in the Hearst Explanatory Reporting category

Journalism, broadcasting and psychology triple major, Andrianna “Andy” Jacobs earned ninth place in the Hearst Explanatory Writing Competition.

JACHT AGENCY WINS FLUX STUDENT DESIGN COMPETITION AWARD

LINCOLN, Neb. – Jacht Agency received a video/motion graphics honorable mention award from the 2020 Flux Student Design Competition for their video and production work for The Decent Co.

Four CoJMC broadcasting and production students named NBS competition finalists

Four broadcasting production students are finalists in the National Undergraduate Student Electronic Media Competition, sponsored by National Broadcasting Society (NBS). The awards will be announced Saturday, Mar. 13th, 2021 at the 79th annual NBS/AERho convention at the hybrid event that will be streamed online while taking place in Indianapolis.

356 students earn their spot on the Fall 2020 Dean’s List

College of Journalism and Mass Communications students faced many challenges last semester— from shifting their learning to a more online structure to learning communication during a time history when communication is almost completely virtual.

Jeremy Lohrman announced as new director of development

Jeremy Lohrman, from the University of Nebraska Foundation, has been appointed as the College of Journalism and Mass Communications new director of development. Lohrman is looking forward to working with each of CoJMC’s supporters and helping advance the mission of the college and the university.

Alumni Spotlight: Rusty Cunningham '77

Rusty Cunningham graduated from the college in 1977, and since then has jetsetted across the country for different jobs to further his career in journalism. He went to New York for a year, back to Nebraska for another and then joined Lee enterprises where he worked for several different newspapers from 1979 to 2020. Cunningham recently retired from his role as the executive editor of River Valley Media.

Celebrating the grants, fellowships and professorships recently awarded to faculty

Congratulations to the College of Journalism and Mass Communications faculty members who have recently received a grant, fellowship or professorship to further their research. Faculty are tackling challenges in their prospective industries such as—computer mediated communication among female athletes and news coverage of water issues in Nebraska. Others have plans to study the effects of COVID-19 on the advertising industry or develop a Public Insight Lab.
