Dear Alumni and Friends,
I am delighted to announce that Charlie Arnot (’86) has been named our 2024 Alumni Master. As founder and CEO of Look East and the Center for Food Integrity, Charlie is a highly regarded leader and sought-after speaker who engages audiences around the globe. The Alumni Masters program honors UNL alumni who have demonstrated success and leadership in their fields. Check out this story on Charlie and his impact on the industry and the CoJMC.
One aspect I love about being dean is getting to hear from alumni about how their careers evolved. This month, in addition to celebrating our Huskers on the Move, we feature seven alumni whose careers went a different direction than planned, but the foundational skills they learned in the J-School prepared them for unique opportunities. Thank you to Jeff Salem (‘08), Steve Smith (‘94), Jana McGuire (‘86), Natalie Johnson (’97), Barry Kriha (’93), Mindy Burback (’11) and Liz Austin (‘79) for sharing your stories!
Lee Talley (’78) shared a unique opportunity he had in J-School with Nebraska Quarterly. The Electric Light Orchestra (ELO) tour came through Lincoln while Talley was writing for the DN and covering shifts on 90.3 KRNU. He still has the backstage pass from the 1977 ELO concert in Pershing Auditorium!
We have much to celebrate this month with big honors from AAF Creative Nebraska, Omaha Press Club, Nebraska Broadcasters Association, the Perry Photo Challenge and Bailey Lauerman, along with our February awards for faculty, staff and students. Also, check out the stories on Assistant Professor Ciera Kirkpatrick’s latest research, Hitchcock Professor Barney McCoy’s new documentary, journalism major Marissa Kraus’s work with women in sports, media training for public health officials and Jake Albanez’s (’11) Guinness World Record for the fastest half marathon in a graduation gown!
Looking to next month, George Tuck’s Celebration of Life will be on Saturday, April 13, at 1:30 p.m. in Andersen Hall. The Memorial Program will be live streamed here for those who cannot attend in person.
The 2024 Seline Lecture will be held at 12:30 p.m. on April 25 in the Swanson Auditorium of the Nebraska Union. Todd Purdum, who covered the Clinton White House for The New York Times, and Mike McCurry, who served as press secretary for President Clinton will share their insights on the evolving political landscape. Please join us!
Go Big Red!
