In February, we celebrated numerous achievements of our students, faculty and staff at the College of Journalism and Mass Communications. Bill Doleman was named the February Professor of the Month, Hannah Roebke was awarded the February Student of the Month and Adam Wagler, Haley Hamel and Alisa Smith were selected as the February Not Too Shabby award winners.
Doleman is a lecturer in the sports media and communication program. Doleman joined the CoJMC in the fall of 2022 after a 30-year career as a sportscaster for regional and national television networks. In his professional career, Doleman covered every major professional sports league, high-level collegiate conferences, four Olympic Games, several World Championships and World Cup events. Doleman was nominated for Professor of the Month by Haley Hamel, who praised his willingness to share his expertise with not only current students but also prospective students by participating in college recruitment events.
Roebke is a senior broadcasting and sports media and communication double major from Seward. Assistant Professor of Practice Jill Martin nominated her for Student of the Month. Martin praised her dedication and hard work, which led to an internship with the Washington Nationals.
The CoJMC Student Advisory Board selects the professor and student of the month based on the kudos they received during the previous month. Professors receive an award plaque, and student winners can choose from three prizes: a college T-shirt, a Starbucks gift card, or lunch with CoJMC Dean Shari Veil.
The CoJMC Staff Council presents the Not Too Shabby Awards to faculty and staff members who go above and beyond the call of duty and have earned the appreciation of their peers.
Adam Wagler, associate dean for academic programs and associate professor of advertising and public relations, received the Faculty Not Too Shabby Award. Wagler was nominated by Shari Veil, the Jane T. Olson Dean of CoJMC, for his work adjusting the college's course schedule in response to evolving budget situations.
Alisa Smith, director of advising, and Haley Hamel, director of business and operations, received the Staff Not Too Shabby Award. Smith was nominated by Kaitlin Van Loon, communications and marketing associate, for the care and support she shows to struggling colleagues. Hamel was nominated by Assistant Professor Jessica Walsh, who praised her expertise, advice and problem-solving skills.
