Ariana Garber, a junior advertising and public relations and journalism double major from Papillion, was awarded the Bailey Lauerman Scholarship for Student Opportunity by the College of Journalism and Mass Communications Scholarship Committee on March 4.

The BL Scholarship encourages advertising and public relations students to cultivate a diverse and rich campus environment at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. While pursuing her undergraduate degree, Garber has been active in several campus organizations that celebrate her Asian American, Pacific Islander and Hispanic heritage.

“When I first started looking for a community on campus that I felt best represented me, I thought that finding it would be enough to fill a void I had inside of me,” Garber said. “But I soon realized that the best part of being in these organizations was that I got to be an advocate, creating the change that I wanted to see on campus.”

Garber is a member of the Delta Xi Nu Multicultural Sorority, University of Nebraska Intertribal Exchange, Filipino Student Association, Asian Student Association, Asian Student Union, Advertising Club and the UNL chapter of the Public Relations Student Society of America.

“Ariana stood out as a finalist for the Bailey Lauerman Scholarship because of her extensive involvement on the UNL Campus,” said Tiffany Groteluschen, chair of the CoJMC Scholarship Committee. “She is passionate about ensuring that underrepresented students find their community at UNL.”

The application process for the BL Scholarship is rigorous, and candidates must demonstrate a passion for advertising and public relations, academic achievement and a commitment to diversity and the community. More than 30 applicants applied for the highly competitive award. Garber will receive a $5,000 scholarship for the 2024-2025 academic year and an offer to participate in Bailey Lauerman’s annual summer internship program.

“Ariana’s campus involvement is clear evidence that she is driving the change that she wants to experience in the world…not just finding a place for belonging herself, but creating it for others,” Bailey Lauerman CEO Greg Andersen said. “Ariana recognizes that marketing communications has the power to do more than achieve a client’s commercial ambitions, as she wrote, it can also ‘sell the good of the world.’”

The Bailey Lauerman Scholarship for Student Opportunity was established at the University of Nebraska Foundation in 2020 and builds upon BL’s long-standing relationship with the UNL College of Journalism and Mass Communications. The scholarship is awarded annually to a sophomore or junior advertising and public relations major at UNL.
