Dean's Update February 2021

Tuesday, February 23, 2021 - 12:00pm

Dear Alumni and Friends,

Valentine’s Day is over, but we are still feeling the love in the College of Journalism and Mass Communications. We enjoyed hearing the love stories of our alumni who met in or through the college. Some of our love birds have been living together for five years. Others have now been married for over 50 years. Professor Rick Alloway showed up in a couple of the love stories. He even officiated one of the weddings! We always knew the CoJMC was a great place to fall in love with career. It was fun to learn about our alumni who fell in love with each other too!

This newsletter is filled with student accomplishments including our 356 students who made the Dean’s List last semester and awards from the American Advertising FederationFlux Design Competition, National Broadcasting Society Undergraduate Student Electronic Media CompetitionHearst Explanatory Writing Competition, and the Hearst Audio Competition.

This spring, faculty members Joe Starita and Jenn Sheppard launched a course called "Being Black in Lincoln", this class of 15 students will write a dozen profiles on Black residents of Lincoln that will be published in the Lincoln Journal Star.

We are also pleased to announce multiple faculty grant awards and a new book published by Maria Marron

Please join us tonight for Knowledge on Tap, a new monthly series for CoJMC graduate students and alumni to discuss emerging topics and trends in journalism and mass communications. I have the honor of kicking off this first happy hour event on Thursday, Feb. 25 at 5:30 p.m. (CST). Please join me with your favorite beverage in hand to learn more about crisis communication research and how our industries have adapted during the pandemic.

Finally, thank you to everyone who contributed to Glow Big Red 24-hours of giving. We more than doubled our donations from last year! Your support makes a difference in the lives of our students. If you’ve ever thought about establishing a scholarship or contributing to one of our student experiences like KRNUJacht or our depth reporting program, I would be happy to provide more information about the process.

Go Big Red!

Shari
