Dean's Update: June 2023

Wednesday, June 14, 2023 - 9:15am

Dear Alumni and Friends,

Happy birthday to The Daily Nebraskan! Whether you called it the DN or the Rag, our student newspaper launched the careers of some incredibly successful alums. Share your memories, read the first issue, give to the Editorial Support Fund or pick up some swag to celebrate The Daily Nebraskan’s 122nd birthday.

The first issue of The Daily Nebraskan was published on June 13, 1901, but its predecessor, the Monthly Hesperian Student, was founded in 1871! The managing editor of the Hesperian in 1893 was none other than Willa Cather whose sculpture joined Ponca Chief Standing Bear in the Capitol’s Statuary Hall early this month.

While they’re not quite ready for Statuary Hall, our recent grads are making big moves! Check out our Huskers on the Move and spotlights on recent grads Victoria Baker, Ana Chincoa and Kloee Sander. Alumni Chris DeRuyscher ('00) and Carson Vaughan ('10) aren’t exactly recent grads, but they are certainly making big moves. Chris will be inducted into the Information Display & Entertainment Association (IDEA) Hall of Fame next month, and Carson was just featured on Great Plains Anywhere.

If you are looking to make a career move, sign up to receive our Career Bulletin, which features entry-level to advanced managerial positions. This month, we are featuring an opening with one of our important recruiting partners, Bay High. Have you ever considered teaching journalism? While the position is listed as part time with full benefits at Lincoln Public Schools, there may be an opportunity to expand the position and teach here at the CoJMC too. Let me know if you are interested in learning more!

Our newly awarded Matousek Scholars are getting ready to lead their fellow students in the Experience Lab this fall. Thanks to an incredible gift from Mark and Chris Matousek, our student leads will receive a thousand-dollar scholarship each semester to reward their leadership in our Experience Lab. Learn more about our Matousek Scholars here

Students from across our college earned recognition this month. Drew Baldridge was awarded the 2023 Bailey Lauerman Student Opportunity Scholarship, Hannah-Kate Kinney and Kylee Sodomka were awarded Nebraska Broadcasters Association Scholarships, Hallie Gutzwiller was awarded runner-up in the Hearst National Audio Championship, Dulce Garcia was named Outstanding Honors Graduate, Bobby Coleman and Marissa Lindemann were selected to the Rural Fellows internship program and students in Jacht and NSAC brought home nine Prism Awards and three Sterling Awards from the American Marketing Association.

There are several upcoming events where you can engage with your fellow Huskers. If you’re in the Kansas City area, I hope you’ll join me for Drinks with the Dean next week at Minsky’s Pizza. If you’re in the Denver area or managed to score tickets to the Colorado game, come out on Thursday, Sept. 7, as the Huskers take over Coors Field. Also, save the date now for our Homecoming Party on Friday, Oct. 27.

Do you have a story idea for the alumni newsletter? Let us know! Have you made a recent career move? Share recent updates in your life and career. Want to help us better serve you and future CoJMC alums? Compete our alumni survey. We want to hear from you!

Go Big Red!
