Obituary: JL (John) Schmidt

JL (John) Schmidt, 77, was born December 20, 1946, in Scottsbluff, Nebr., and passed to eternity April 21, 2024. A Scottsbluff native and 1976 University of Nebraska-Lincoln College of Journalism graduate, Schmidt began his newspaper career at The Daily Nebraskan in 1966. He worked as a reporter, copy editor, business manager and night news editor.

Powell receives national award

Karley Powell, a senior in the College of Journalism and Mass Communication, received the 2018 Ruth Edelman Public Relations Student Society of America Award. Her award includes a $1,500 prize and a three-month paid internship at the Edelman office in New York City.

CoJMC alumna Paula Lavigne, an investigative reporter at ESPN, was recently named a winner of the 2017 Investigative Reporters & Editors (IRE) awards in the book category for "Violated: Exposing Rape at Baylor University Amid College Football’s Sexual Assault Crisis.”

Hassler

Hassler selected to participate in solutions journalism academy

Associate Professor of Practice Michelle Hassler was selected to be part of the inaugural Solutions Journalism Education Academy this summer. Hassler is one of 10 participants attending the July 12-13 academy at the University of Oregon School of Journalism and Communication.

CoJMC professor wins award for documentary film

“Black Jack Pershing: Love and War” has been honored with an Award of Excellence by judges in the Broadcast Education Association’s Festival of Media Arts documentary division competition. Producer/director Barney McCoy, broadcasting professor at the CoJMC, was honored with the award at the BEA’s 2018 convention in Las Vegas, Nevada, on Sunday, April 8.

Burge announces retirement

On Monday, April 2, 2018, Trudy Burge, assistant professor of practice and technical writing coordinator, announced her retirement from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln College of Journalism and Mass Communications (CoJMC). Her final day with the college will be May 11, 2018.

This is a special week at the CoJMC as we celebrate J-Days, a springtime tradition. I am especially excited about this year’s event, because our students are in charge! The Student Advisory Board (SAB), with members that include freshmen through seniors, and representatives of each major, has created a wonderful suite of activities. The leadership they have taken to add their own contributions to our college culture is truly heart-warming.
