Dean's Update: April 2024

April 16, 2024

Shari Veil, Jane T. Olson Dean of the College of Journalism and Mass Communications

We had packed house over the weekend as alums traveled across the country to celebrate the life and legacy of Professor George Tuck. Speakers included CoJMC alums Jennifer Gutierrez (‘90), Mike Theiler (‘76), Julia Dean (‘92), Joel Sartore (‘85) and George and Mary Lynn’s dear friend Sherri Johnson. You can watch the recording of the live stream here.

Alumni Master Charlie Arnot (’86), was back on campus this month to meet with students throughout the college. Check out his award acceptance speech and the interviews he did with CoJMC Professors Rick Alloway and Kristian Anderson on how Nebraska prepared him for his career and why he believes in mentoring the next generation of communication leaders.

I hope you can join us next week for the 2024 Seline Lecture. Todd Purdum, who covered the Clinton White House for The New York Times, and Mike McCurry, who served as press secretary for President Clinton will share their insights on the evolving political landscape. The lecture will be held at 12:30 p.m. on April 25 in the Swanson Auditorium of the Nebraska Union.

On May 1, at 7 p.m., in the Mary Riepma Ross Media Arts Center, we will be screening "Running Towards the Fire," a documentary highlighting the remarkable efforts of World War II correspondents. Gilbert and Martha Hitchcock Professor of Journalism Barney McCoy directed the film. Reserve your ticket here.

AI is certainly a hot topic right now. Luckily, we have experts right here in the CoJMC. Professors Matt Waite and Bryan Wang recently presented at Civic Nebraska’s “Democracy in the Age of AI” Community Summit. Professor Wang also helped coordinate the “Media Literacy in the Age of Artificial Intelligence” Symposium. Do you have questions about how AI is affecting our professions? Send them to me! I’ll take them to our local experts and report back to you.

Now that travel is back to normal, our students are looking for opportunities to travel abroad and our alums are helping them prepare. Earlier this month Ronald Ng (‘93), MRM Global Creative Director, Zoomed in to talk to our advertising and public relations students about working with international clients. Dionne Searcey (‘93), New York Times Reporter, will join us later this week to talk about her experience as the former West and Central Africa Bureau Chief for The Times.

Sophomore journalism and broadcasting major Marissa Lindemann won the 2024 George and Eva Grimes Memorial Competition, which will provide her with a $2,000 scholarship to support her summer study abroad program in Namibia. Studying abroad can have a profound impact on a student. Unfortunately, it’s an opportunity few students can afford. If you are interested in learning more about how you can support study abroad in the CoJMC, please let me know. I’d love to share information about the opportunities we are planning for next summer.

Want to see what kind of work our students can produce while abroad? Join us on Friday, May 10 from 5:30-7 p.m. in Andersen Hall to see our Global Eyewitness students present their final projects at the ‘Voices of Vietnam’ exhibition!

We have much to celebrate this month with a whopping 22 Eric Sevareid Awards, another Hearst Journalism Award, NBA Scholarship Winners, Chancellor Scholar Announcements, College Award Winners, and the culmination of the Roper Sports Writing Competition.

Our alumni are also doing big things! Check out these stories on Sarah Baker Hansen (’01), Jennifer Higgins (’96), our incredible ethics panel and all our Huskers on the Move.

Go Big Red!
