Obituary: JL (John) Schmidt

JL (John) Schmidt, 77, was born December 20, 1946, in Scottsbluff, Nebr., and passed to eternity April 21, 2024. A Scottsbluff native and 1976 University of Nebraska-Lincoln College of Journalism graduate, Schmidt began his newspaper career at The Daily Nebraskan in 1966. He worked as a reporter, copy editor, business manager and night news editor.

CoJMC to co-sponsor Mobile Me&You Conference

MobileMe&You Conference at UNL Oct. 20-22

Luke Weidner

Graduation Spotlight: Luke Weidner

Over the weekend Luke Weidner graduated with distinction from the College of Journalism and Mass Communications. Weidner studied advertising, public relations and journalism while at the college. His internship experiences with Nebraska's Athletic Department and Hudl led him to his new role at North Dakota State University as the director of graphic design in their athletics department.

14 CoJMC faculty members attend the 2022 AEJMC conference

Fourteen faculty members from the College of Journalism and Mass Communications attended the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication (AEJMC) conference Aug. 2-6, in Detroit. Many served as panelists, moderators and discussants or they presented their research in a variety of sessions throughout the four-day conference.

Lauren Penington selected to attend the Society of Professional Journalists Student Leadership Institute

College of Journalism and Mass Communications junior Lauren Penington of Parker, Colorado, was selected to attend the Society of Professional Journalists (SPJ) Student Leadership Institute. At Nebraska, the advertising and public relations and political science double major is vice president of the Society of Professional Journalists student club. Penington was one of 23 students from across the country selected to attend the second annual SPJ Student Leadership Institute.

The Nebraska High School Press Association hosts J-Camp 2022 at Andersen Hall

The Nebraska High School Press Association (NHSPA) hosted the 2022 J-Camp Summer Workshop for high school journalism students at Andersen Hall on July 11-13. Students attended three-days of intensive workshops on journalistic writing, video production, photography, yearbook and newspaper design and editorial leadership with direction from workshop advisers at the NHSPA and UNL College of Journalism and Mass Communications.

Rachel Haufler chosen to receive an American Advertising Federation of Nebraska Scholarship

Senior advertising and public relations major Rachel Haufler of Topeka, Kan. was awarded a scholarship from the Nebraska chapter of the American Advertising Federation (AAF) for the 2022-2023 school year.
