Thomas Horky to serve as the 2025 Lynn & Dana Roper Visiting Professor in Sports Journalism

Thomas Horky will serve as the Lynn and Dana Roper Visiting Professor in Sports Journalism from March 3-7, 2025. Horky is a professor of sports journalism at Macromedia University of Applied Sciences in Hamburg, Germany and he's been teaching since 2009.

During his stay, he'll guest lecture in sports media classes and give a research presentation. "Esports, Formula Extreme E, Kings League and Other Hybrid Forms of Sport – Reflections on a Theory of the Virtualization of Media Sports" is at 2:30 p.m. on Monday, March 3, in the Regency Suite at UNL's City Campus Union.

The event is free and open to the public and registration is not required. During the presentation, Horky will examine how the perception of sports is evolving from real-world competition to immersive, technology-driven experiences.

Horky's research focuses on the quality of journalism (international comparison), media sports, sport management, sport sociology, the staging of sports journalism and entertainment.

He's the assistant editor of the journal Communication & Sport, an editorial board member for several international journals (Communication & Sport, Global Sport Business Journal, Modern Sport Communication, Journal of Chengdu Sport University) and adviser of the Bung Karno Center for Sport and Communication in Indonesia.

The Lynn and Dana Roper Fund encourages and rewards sports writing among journalism students by providing a yearly visit from a noted sportswriter to teach at the college and financing the annual sports writing contest.
