Students, faculty and alumni win at the Eric Sevareid awards

Six University of Nebraska-Lincoln College of Journalism and Mass Communications students, one alum and Associate Professor John Shrader, took home awards from the Midwest Broadcast Journalists Association Eric Sevareid Awards Competition in April 2021.   

Allie Snow, who graduated from CoJMC in December 2020, took first place in the Hard Feature category for her entry, “Sound of a Pandemic.”   

Geoff Exstrom, a junior sports media and communication and broadcasting double major, earned first place in the Talk/Public Affairs category for his entry, “Campus Voices: Dave Berman and the Challenges of Covering Covid-19.”   

A team entry, “Legacy Over Image: Addressing BLM & Equality Within Nebraska Athletics,” took First Place in the Team Multimedia Storytelling – News Category. The team included Ashley Chong, junior, journalism major; Ted Cronin, junior, advertising and public relations and history double major;  Cicia Lin, junior, advertising and public relations major; Karlie Moore, sophomore, broadcasting and sports media and communication double major and Caitlyn Thomas, sophomore, journalism major.   

Associate Professor John Shrader took first place in the Documentary/Special category for his entry, “Chris Schmidt Watch the Media Special.”   

The Eric Sevareid Awards are presented annually by the Midwest Broadcast Journalists Association for the best work done by broadcast news operations and journalists working in small, medium and large markets in a six-state region that includes Minnesota, Wisconsin, North Dakota, South Dakota, Iowa and Nebraska.
