In partnership with First Generation Nebraska, the College of Journalism and Mass Communications (CoJMC) will be hosting alumna Mekita Rivas for a presentation to students on Nov. 10 from 3 to 4:30 p.m. at The Agency (1420 P st.) as a part of First Gen Awareness Week. Rivas will speak about her experience as a first-generation student and now professional journalist.
Rivas graduated from UNL in 2012 with a double major in Journalism and English. She is currently a contributing editor at Cosmopolitan Magazine and Bustle.com based in Washington D.C.
Rivas regularly covers culture, style and politics through the lens of gender, race, and ethnicity. Her writing has been published in some of the nation’s largest publications, including The New York Times, Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar, InStyle, Glamour, and Refinery29. She’s also interviewed celebrities such as Chrissy Teigen, Serena Williams, Rep. Maxine Waters, and Sen. Cory Booker
Students are encouraged to attend this one-of-a-kind opportunity to hear more about Mekita’s story and journey as a first-generation student.
Rivas will also speak as part of the First Gen speaker series on November 11th from 6-7 p.m. at the City Campus Union.
